I went to see the house again last night, with my agent friend's partner, the contractor. Janet sent me some estimates on what I could expect to get the house in more livable shape, which includes insulation, upgrading/converting the furnace, new electrical (outlets, the box is already 100 amp), replacing some drop ceilings, refinishing the floors and redoing the walls/ceilings in the 2nd floor space/bedroom. Without doing a kitchen rehab, and excluding the cost of new appliances in the kitchen, the estimate was $12,000. That's about all my budget for post purchase work...so I dunno. I haven't put in a bid yet anyway, but I think I'm going to hold off a little longer and see if it sells right away. If it doesn't...then we'll see.

QOD: funny, this doesn't feel like a great summer to me either. Spent a lot of it apart from The Guy, spent the first two holiday weekends with nothing to do, and my beach vacation was nice, but stressful in its own way as well. I guess spending so much time with my sis and my nie-phews was the best part of the summer. And the couple days I spent with The Guy over Labor Day, once we'd worked some things out, were lovely.

Weird to say, but I think my favorite part of the summer was work. I love my coworkers and I like my job. I also like HAVING a job.

My upstairs neighbors signed us up for Boston Organics. I owe them $10 a week for some organic (although not necessarily local) produce. I hope I can keep up and eat what I'll be getting...they got 1/2 veg 1/2 fruit, but I just don't eat a lot of fruit, and no, this won't make me eat it. I guess I can always bring stuff in to work.

Crane: I know this may seem very very petty, but I have done this with my own children from time to time, when name calling between them has reached a level that has exhausted me, because, let's face it, that's what this is, control through name calling. When they call you "Girl", ignore them but make sure you address the culprit as "Mr. Snotrag" or "Mr. Dirty Diaper" at the very next opportunity. Then continue as if nothing untoward has happened. It's perfectly normal for a teacher to address their student as "Mr. Cries During Chick Flicks". Be careful not to use swear words or sexual undertones. Make a list of good names the night before. Don't try to wing it.

Keep it clean but make your point. That point being, "If you address me in a manner that is derogatory and mean, I will return the favor. Now let's get on with the lesson." You watch and see if that behavior doesn't stop.

If that doesn't work. Kick them out and tell them they can't return until they write a letter of apology to you, cc'ing the Dean and the school news paper. Tell them before you kick them out that those are the consequences of their actions though, so they know what they are getting themselves into.

You shouldn't. I woke up with that song in my head this morning, and I've been trying to get rid of it all day. I thought by passing it off on you guys it might help. Unfortunately, it has just made it worse. I was caught humming it in my cubicle while chowing down on free communal kitchen blueberry pie. There is nothing sadder than a lonely chick stuffing her face with pie.

parenting thoughts and vibes to litch and shannon

beaks, we will be THOSE parents as well. DH and i both grew up in humble families and are determined that our kids understand the value of a dollar as well.

hooray to duck and your new place!

hi winter!

MIL left this morning. a huge sigh of relief that i have my own place back even though it is messy. things ended up working out once i directed her nad gave her specific directions (the baby needs to eat every 2-3 hrs and we can't just let her cry even though you think its good exercise- she lacks self soothing skills at one month of age).

so, my little allie kate turned one month old yesterday. we went out and bought cakes (ok, cupcakes to be exact!) to celebrate (a chinese tradition) and i got all emotional. its been a hard month but we got through it.

just about ready to move on friday.

good days to you all!

Mmmm...pass the pie. Enjoy!

The place we stopped on Friday night during Reach the Beach had homemade pie with fresh, wild Maine blueberries. I'm still thinking about it. Wasn't able to enjoy it due to the timing of consumption and my next run.

QOD: Hands down, the best thing from the summer -- hell, of this sh*tty, sh*tty year I've had -- was my trip across the country. MN was a blast, Vegas was BIG, the drive through the Mojave was a.w.e.s.o.m.e, and L.A., as always, feels so comfortable to me. And reconnecting with an old, great friend from HS made the trip that much better.

Except for that one part of that one day where we were severely dehydrated.

QOD: DW and I returned to Rochester, NY (home of my alma mater) for the first time in 13 years in June - which was fun despite the broken ankle. And rum drinks/beaches/snorkeling in the Caribbean probably deserves a mention.

So I've heard.

I do actually know a lot of their stuff, at least the ones that get radio play and I've heard a bit of the new album. But I remarked to TG that I have to remember my ear plugs. He just gave me the look. Heh.
