not sure what i have planned for later today. might attempt to TM a few miles.. we'll see. i've become less interested in running this past week.. i sort of feel like my priorities are shifting and that i'm starting to nest a bit. that plus waking up early is harder b/c working and just moving about is harder and taking up more energy and time. for instance, i've had to add 10 mins to my morning commute in order to make it to work on time!

we went hiking at el yunque, the rainforest in puerto rico this past weekend. it was rated a "strenuous and challenging" hike with about a 1000 ft ascension which i had no problems with. our tour guide was pretty concerned but i managed to convince him to let me go up. got a lot of intrigued looks and comments on way up and down.. i'm just floored how many people think that an 8.5 month pregnant woman shouldn't go hiking - what in the world do they think our ancestors do? lie in their caves all day long??

Tim, smart move calling it quits yesterday. You never know how the heat is going to effect you.

Thanks everyone. I'm trying to be smart about it. It seems like I have three carpy runs for every one good one. Ugh! But I know that I don't do well on low amounts of sleep and I have to get up at 4:00am tomorrow morning for saturday's long run. That's why I bagged this morning after little to no sleep.

But everyone's got the same challenges. So, enough of my beyotching about it. Thanks for the support.

Does anyone watch Wipeout? Good night and big balls.

Wipeout is funny. We watch it for a few minutes every now and then.

Hiya Vidalia!

Not sure what today's exercise shall be. It would be a great day for cycling...

Good runs, everybody! Stay cool and hydrated!

My upcoming races are in my sig...

busy day at work today - hence the late post

Last night I got in a faster than the morning 3 miles at the lake and then went up to lift. It was ball squat/pull up night - i.hate.ball.squat.pull.up.night! Seriously, my 2 least favorite exercises. It didn't take long for both my legs and arms to be blown up completely. I was shaking when I left.

ran 3 miles recovery this morning and am planning on taking the pups on a long walk after work.

I know it's late in the day, on a Friday, but wanted to post a link for discussion (if anyone wants to discuss).

Not sure how many on here subscribe to Running Times, but the editor in chief had a great essay/article in the July/August issue.

If it sparks a discussion, I'll post what I thought of it...

KP, thanks for that article. I do have comments, but I'm not ready to make them yet. Maybe next week. I am curious to see what others thought, though.

Now I'm off to read KP's article...

Wow, okay, I just read it. Geez, he sure seems like he's dissing me and what I'm trying to do. I mean, I get his point. But for me, the marathons I run are nothing more than having fun. I enjoy travelling around the country, especially when I get to hang out with you guys, and it's a fun way to stay in shape.

In other words, I don't take myself seriously enough for what he says to apply to me...

That really is an interesting article; thanks for posting it. I have always suspected that the numbers in the chart at the bottom of the page might be in that range, but I've never seen them spelled out before.

I can relate to the feeling he describes of pushing yourself too hard too fast and getting sucked into injuries. I stopped running after hurting my knee during a half-marathon, in a week when I had done a group long run I had no business doing. I mean, I knew I should stop at 16 miles at the very longest and yet, for some dumb reason, I did the rest of it anyway. This time around I am taking everything so painstakingly slow that it is almost laughable. Fewer miles, slower increases, slower paced training, fewer races.

That said, if one grooves to the longer distances, that is what one should do--not everyone's idea of a good time is hurling after a 5K, and it's all about enjoying oneself.

5ish hot miles this afternoon.

Have I told you guys about my 3rd leg in the upcoming relay? 900+ feet of climbing in 4 miles starting over 5000' in elevation in the mid-day sun where it was 96F today. Ooof.

KP, I'll read the article and chime in later.

(((Brandy's ball squats)))

OK, read the article. I agree to the extent that it's pretty much how my running has evolved. My typical 50 to 60 mile week during peak training certainly isn't enough to race the marathon as it might have prepared me for the half. The plan for Boston next year is to try to get my mileage up to 70-80 mpw if I can swing it, and even then I'm 20 lbs and 20 years removed from running my best.

But I think the general sentiment doesn't apply to maracationers like boB and other Maniacs. In fact, I think that a lot of Maniacs treat 80% of their marathons as long training runs and then attempt a goal race every year or two. It also doesn't seem to apply to charity runners, and it certainly doesn't apply to 30s gatherings! It's tough enough to justify flying x-country to run a marathon, how are we going to convince our spouses that we're traveling 2000 miles to run a 5k? :D
