Maybe a small technicality, and perhaps not what is "stressing" YoshiGirl out, but I don't read this course as necessarily having 6000 feet of climbing. I read relative numbers, such as "then you climb to 7000 feet," which is probably not, in this case, the same as "then you climb 7000 feet." One might cause a DNF while the other might cause nothing more than a great race.

Yoshi, if this excites you, do it. I don't think it's a once in a lifetime event... you'd qualify again. But you know, life is too short not to do what you enjoy, as if it inspires, go for it.

My point is, don't let the forum try to inspire you, you either are or your not, I would say she's not in the race itself. Comments all make us feel great and sway us, but we need to dig down deep in what we really want with a one on one with ourselves. If she was truly inspired she would have signed up and then sent a post saying how awesome this was. But instead sends a second post with the gory details and still iffy. Don't wait for us to push you over the edge. Things like this will only stress your life out, and really, if its not a goal of yours, do you really care? Plus from what I know of Yosh over the 3 years on this forum, I'm betting she may be happier doing something else.

I see too many folks signing up for races they don't have their hearts in, and just do it, stress about, then makes excuses when things don't go right, yours truly included. From the last Tri race report I saw from Yoshi, she seemed super excited about marathon training.... so that sounds like the path to me. Like you said if she wants this some day she can qualify again.

Scott didn't have to remind me - there are definately reasons why I haven't signed up for it yet, even after getting DH's support. And believe me I am a strong-willed woman - I make my own decision and I don't like to do anything in half-a*s way. I was just telling my daughter the other day how easy and relaxed it feel to just run, instead of juggling swim, bike, full-time work including traveling, kids' schedule and all those things. I do enjoy tri training very much, but not all year around (probably not even 6 months), I spend much more time running throughout the year.

So having said that, I have about a week to think about this before this slot gets rolled down. I like new challenges, new opportunities and excitement and certainly this opportunity fits the bill. Things are often not a clear-cut, black and whilte. It is ok not to jump in, but to think about it, weigh pros & cons and reach to a decision. I will be in for 100% once a decision is made.

My point is...

For clarity here, I was not in any way negating what you said. I point this out because you highlighted my words and then went on to clarify. My words were not against you. My words were saying that the overall climbing on the course may not be as it first seems. I pointed it out because, truthfully, if that was one of the reasons Yoshi was undecided, I could help eliminate one reason.

All the other stuff you are very correct. And I know you talk from personal experience. You have to be into what you're doing, otherwise it owns you in a way that saps most if not all of the fun from it. Life is far to short to do things we don't enjoy, or to keep up with what "others" are doing, or to do something as a check mark. I never got why people would do the last one. Your heart, as you said, has to be in it.

I don't think there's anything wrong with words on these forums inspiring someone else, or talking them into, doing something as long as it is something they want to do, where the words help push them to do something they would not have done otherwise. But if the pushing into is beyond what's in the person's heart, then it *could* (but doesn't have to be) turn out to be a miserable experience.

will YOU regret it if you don't do it? to me, that's your answer.

(congrats, btw. whether you go or not, it's pretty cool!)

Well, whatever you decide, it's exciting that you qualified!!! It sounded to me like you were really enjoying the MTB'ing, and this may be an incredible experience!! Or not See, I'm not trying to sway you.....

It is official. I AM GOING!!

Yes the 10mile climb scares the c*ap out of me, yes just thinking about racing at 6000+altitude makes me hyperventilate, no I didn't win this slot by beating the tough competition nor my MTB skills match the challenging course. But I Am Doing It. I love challenges. And this is getting more and more exciting every day, as I hit singletracks more, ride more with my husband who got me into off-road biking. I am having already much more fun training than I already have.

So, mark your calender. Sept 24th, Sat. Live coverage or not.

Way to go, Yoshi!

There's a saying that goes, "You have to be in it to win it." It is usually reserved for the lottery and things like that where things are handed out for free. But I use this to reference exactly the experience you will gain. Rules are rules. You abided by them (by doing the race to qualify), so in a sense, you were in it. And you won it. Fair and square. You know that I won a race, right. It was a 5K. I won it. I may have been the only one in it, but I was in it, and I won it when my opportunity came. Not saying you will win the Nat. Champ, but I am saying that you earned it, however that happened to be. So own up to being a qualifier. No qualifications needed on the explanation. You earned it. And so you are going!

Proud of you.
