Isn't that funny... I had 2nd highest points out of 11 in 40-44AG and qualifed for Nationals in Utah. 11 females in Midwest region were invited out of 69 total point collecters. Even a novice MTBker like me can easily guess the trails in Utah are no comparison to the baby trails in Michigan but here is the tempting statistics. Only six 40-44AG female showed up at Nationals last year. There are Two slots to go to World in Maui. Based on the race times by the two females I know/raced against this year who went to National last year, I could finish in the midpack of that 40-44AG (per the last year's time). The slots could roll down, you know. Kind of tempting to consider heading to Utah for the Nationals in Sept. DH was talking about making a MTB trip out there anyway. Hmmmmm. The competition becomes much more fierce once I age up 45-49 (next year...), so there is little chance that I even qualify for Nationals next year. Of course I can try again to qualify at 50-54

We happened to be in Maui last year during the Xterra World (Oct). Saw a bunch of racers. Wouldn't it be super cool to race there? Dreaming is free.

Thanks guys. But I have an issue.

First, I had little interest when I posted this. Then I got excited thanks to all of you as I realized this would be a once in a life time opportunity. Then, I looked at the course description and ....... I don't know if I can ride the 30K course like this.......... DH is out of town and I haven't spoken to him about it. He knows a few who did this Nationals. I would like DNF.

Any thoughs, MTBers out there? I have about 6wks to learn how to climb....

MOUNTAIN BIKE
Racers leave T1 and head west toward Ogden Canyon for the 30K mountain bike. Mild, steady climbs warm up the legs for more demanding climbs on the first half of the bike leg. Note that most of the first 1.5 miles is on a major road. We are allowed to ride on the shoulder and will use delineators to separate you from traffic. Utah Department of Transportation has said we can not ride in the traffic lanes. Stay inside the delineators. We will have volunteers taking numbers and you will be assessed a minimum of a 2 minute penalty if you are caught riding outside of the lane delineators. Should the police handling traffic stop you, your race is done for the day.

A blend of single track and rocky double track will test your bike skills. Make your move soon, because there's a lot of single track ahead. Turn left near Pineview Dam on to Wheeler Creek Trail heading south. Single track dominates the next ten miles of trail. Course elevation climbs to 7,000 feet during the bike leg and takes just one downhill break at about the halfway point. The descent brings you down 550 feet in elevation over a mile and a half. It's a great time to breathe deep and catch a second wind. The final four miles climb back up to about 6,700 feet to T2.

I don't think you'll DNF. DFL at worst, but DFL at NATIONALS! I finished very nearly DFL in my AG at regular Nationals and am SOOOooooo glad I went. Totally worth it!

Well hold on. First off the fact you didn't seem interested in the first place seems kind of odd, then you are interested with a few posts. Either your heart is in it or not, don't go into it half a&*ed. You have sort of a meh attitude towards it so I'm not sure why you'd bother doing something that you are not fully committed to. I've qualified for national events and had no interest in doing them, its about what will make you happy, what's part of your goals/plans. You are going to sign up, then feel all stressed out about it because of the 6000 of climbing you do in the last 4 miles, or whatever, then I'd say save it, do something else, and stay happy.
