They should be SPD. When I bought my pedals and shoes, the guy at LBS originally told me to buy a certain type of pedal. Then, the other guy said they were really mountain bike pedals, and unless I was doing spin classes, he would recommend a different one. The first ones were SPD. I ended up with the ones that look like Look pedals (the SLs or something -- I always forget what they are), so those cleats won't work with spin bikes. I don't do spin classes, though, so it isn't a big deal to me.

I normally don't do gym spin either.<br><br>
Once Sheldon takes me off of grounding/punishment I'll be back to triathlon/cyclist/adventure racing death spin class.<br><br>
Most gyms have SPD one side and cages for sneakers on the other.<br><br>
Some bikes MAY have spd one side and look on the other.

Our bikes have the SPD clips on them.<br><br>
I wear my bike shoes for spin, but I have cages on my road bike. Sheldon's probably gonna make me change that, huh?

I'm doing my first tri in April...with my Mtn Bike...with cages.<br><br>
Nope..not changing for this race.<br>
With CS's support, too.<br><br>
"you don't want to relearn how to ride a bike."<br><br>
So.....for all y'all dope pushing clipless pedal people who peer pressured me into....... lol lol....<br><br>
Yes, I got real bike shoes, but not the clipless pedals. I got the shoes on super duper double dog dare secret sale. But, I'm waiting on using them till after my tri, when I get a different bike.<br><br>
One learning curve at a time, my friends!!

4BM: I like the spin classes cuz it mixes it up a bit and tends to go by fast with other people, music, etc. I did all my riding indoors last winter as I didn't have a trainer. What I would do is if the instructor was doing a lot of "aerobic jump stuff", I would just stay in the saddle and do my own thing for that portion.

I don't know why, but it really irritates me to see people in class who obviously don't have any resistance on the wheel.<br><br>
I also get irritated with instructors who do the quick jumps, 10 sec spins and 10 secs standing. I just don't see how it makes any sense to do those.

OK, so I'm lucky... never had this quick jumps thing you're talking about.<br><br>
And yeah, I noticed those people with no resistance, that spin at 150 rpm.<br><br>
I'm at the other extreme. Happened a few times that when the instructor gets us to 8 (on a scale of 1-10), I'm already at max resistance. Even got stuck once, quite embarassing.

The jumps are supposed to be for strength builing and to raise your HR. We do them in interval classes.<br><br>
The big thing I love about Spin is how people of any physical condition can go. You can turn your resistance down, or do your own thing when others are standing/jumping, and get a workout that is the right level for YOU. Beginners to exercise are often intimidated, but I talk with them and explain how it's nice in Spin that you can go easier and not stand out, like you would in another class. <img alt="smile.gif" src="http://files.kickrunners.com/smilies/smile.gif">

the one thing I learned from the jumps in spin class that has improved my riding is applying force to the pedal all the way around, consistently, instead of just pushing. if you are up for two and down for two, you really have to be smoothly pedaling or it just doesn't work (at least it did not for me).
