Noticed two interesting things today in spin class:

1. The trainer... She's pregnant, didn't know how far she is, just told us today she's taking a month off since she's due in 2 weeks. 2 weeks!! And she did the entire class on the bike, did everything we did.

2. The girl I was "drafting" behind. A cute new girl sat on the bike in front of me. As she was riding, her pants slipped down a bit, and in that dark neon light everyone could see the tiniest white thong, like a small V shining in the dark.

I took an instructor's class this past saturday. Ditched Sheldon's 4 hour ride for it.

Anyhoo-during the "spin" portion where we actually spun, at least 40% of the class had TERRIBLE technique. Bent backs...wrists at bad angles, pointed toes, etc.

Ooh, in fact your post prompted me to go check the site for training and it's finally posted. April 4th. Woot!

So is there anything I should know going in? Be prepared?

Tithers, it would be fun if more instructors would actually have a cycling background. Most of them seem to be just aerobic people. So, keep studying and get that cert!

Is Mad Dogg the same as Johnny G, or the offical spin company? That's what I'm doing. It's at my rec center!

We have a guy that leads a 90 minute long ride on Sundays, and he's definitely a real cyclist, and you can tell. I like his classes, and I wish he taught others.

I've seen all the usuals: the people who arrive with makeup on, sit on the bike, legs spinning like crazy, without breaking a sweat. The folks who grunt in the back, just to make sure that everyone knows they're working. They all make class a lot more interesting.

most interesting to me is the guy who shows up and hour before class to get a bike the pushes the wheels around slowly for the first 15 min of class. then he get's off he's done. ??? What a waste of a spin class. I always find it most interesting when people just lolly-gag thru
Love the noisy guys. They make class more colorful.

Yes mad dog is johnny G
Court I'd be prepared to ride a whole lot less than you think. And learn a whole lot less too. When I took it it was 3 -12 hour days on the bike but most of that was just listening. We'd ride for 5 min. listen for an hour repeat. The most we actually spun on any given day was an hour. Although I must say after sitting on that stupid bike for all those hours I've never been sore again. Of the 15 ish people in my cert. class only one other guy actually rode outside.? I find that very odd

I found the most interesting parts of class when the teacher was out of the room and those who had other spin certs. talked about what worked and what didn't. Be prepared for awful music.

Chris, eyes up my friend. how anyone rides in a thong is beyond me. Talk about chafing.

Congrats T-girl; Knock em dead!

I wanted to try spin class at my gym. I asked the guy at the front desk what kind of pedals the bikes had. Not a clue. He told me to ask the person that taught the class. She told me I needed to go to the LBS and get mountain bike shoes. Uh, I already have two pairs of road shoes--speed play and SPD--I don't need new shoes. What kind of pedals are on the bikes? She was clueless... Needless to say, I haven't given the class a try.

your road shoes will clip in to the pedals . one side has a cage. the other is for clips. So far everyone's shoes have worked. Since you are there all the time anyway I'd just go in sometime when there is no class and make sure they'll clip in. On the off chance they won't work, you can just wear your runners

To see how way out my mind was... I never even thought about this. Now, with a clear mind... well... might have been more than chafing.

How didn't I think of this? My cellphone was in the pocket of my sweater which was on the floor..

Now speaking of chafing... Don't you remember that thread about the naked triathlon? It was here a few weeks ago, and there were pics on that website.

Well, we'll see. I would love to get it, and I'm planning on it. I want to teach spin, and if I have that cert I can teach spin, as well as about any group cycling class.

1. I know some of the spin classes at our YMCA are taught by a woman who is a really great triathlete. She's won a few around here. She was pregnant last year and doing spin classes up until delivery!

2. If I ever do a spin class, I'll make sure there are women behind me!! I don't want some guy looking at my butt!
