Hmmm. Wasn't a good year of racing for me. Nothing seemed to go right, especially weather-wise.

2007 Goals -
Train hard and run Boston well - Trained hard, but raced stupidly in the conditions.
Mileage PR - 3,500+ this year vs. 3,200 last year.
Set some PR's - 5k (unofficial - 18:10), 8k (31:05), 10 Mile (1:05)
Qualify for New York (1:23 half) - Nope, not even close.
Get back to Boston - Nope.

2008 Goals -
Boston
Mileage PR and more quality runs - That's going to be tough.
Qualify for New York (1:23 half)
More consistent running in the winter

I think that's it. It was a rough year, the Nor'easter and the heat wave marathon. Hopefully these miles start to pay off soon.

Yup, registrations for Tri's are steeper than running races. The sprint I did here was around $95 (last minute) and the HIM I did was about $110 (super-early discount). The IM was $500 when you add the stupid $25 Active fee (why THAT is more, I do NOT understand) and there is no early registration discount for those since they all sell out, usually withing a few weeks of opening registration 1 year in advance of the event. And then you need to join USAT either annual membership or a 1-day membership if the events are USAT-sanctioned (I've heard horror stories about some that are NOT.) The reasons for the cost increase are the additional permits and road closure support due to the bike leg, lifeguarding and emergency teams for the swim. Overall, the course covers more ground which takes more cones, signs, insurance, volunteers (still costs $$ to give someone a t-shirt, lunch, water, etc), traffic control, timing mats, etc.

Hey all!

Noni- Week 3 of being sick for me as well...
week 1 cold
week 2 stomach virus
week 3 another fargin' cold!

So I did a short 20 min on EM last night along with a 1 mile run and crunches! that felt totally stupid doing 1 mile.

It's great to read about others goals. I had 3 goals for 2007,
drop a pant size, ~ umm... nope!
maintain weight training, ~ well... not consistantly!
Run a 1/2 marathon, ~ yep!

I have not thought about 2008, other than possibly running the Madison 1/2 in May.

I ordered some snow shoes today, been waiting for them to go on sale for 2 years!! With a couple more inches on the way for tomorrow, I am super excited to get them, and they are a great workout.

Hmmm...2007 goal-wise I was pretty successful

1) Break 2-hours at the HM distance: done both unofficially and officially
2) Get in my first triathlon - check
3) Get in my first 50K or 2nd marathon - nope
4) Unexpected bonus department: Breaking 50.xx at the 10K distance

The first half of 2008 goal-wise is completely different, as I don't have have a specific goal race/distance in mind right now
1) Getting off the nagging injury snide
2) Less racing in favor of more quality training
3) Adding a few pounds of lean muscle to the frame

Goals I may have imagined before 2007 changed a lot when my left leg went in the cast on the 4th of January. These were the goals I adopted while in the cast.

2007 goals --

Run injury free upon return -- Nothing like a distal tibia fracture to make a person think about things. I realized that if the idea of running was to improve my fitness, it would help a whole hell of a lot if I could keep running and getting injured would be a huge impediment to that. I think we can say that I have accomplished this goal over the past 7 months.

Half-marathon -- This one was important to me. It represented a big but achievable mark of progress if I could accomplish staying healthy and the will to train for it. Just a gradual ramping up of the mileage, making notes about what happened with my blood sugars, and I made it there. November 18th is still quite prominent in my thoughts. That was a huge day, one I worked hard for.

Improve 5K times -- As long as I stayed healthy and did my half-marathon training, this one was pretty easy. Started off at 37:37 on May 5th, got under 30 minutes with 29:35 on July 21st, and my current 5K best was 27:49 on the 28th of October. I'm hoping that maybe on Sunday I can tuck in under 27 minutes, meaning a 10 minute improvement in 7 months of time about.

Improve upper body strength -- This may not have happened if I hadn't broken my leg. 2 days before the x-rays and cast, I bought the pull up bar and installed it in a door frame. When I was put in the cast, I realized that I was facing a long downtime but I still had an exercise option to exploit, get stronger. Lots of progress on this goal.

It was a good year. I have to think more about specific target kind of goals for 2008, but the general goals from above are still in play for this coming year.

Lotta TRI talk going on this week....mama like

Brandy, if it's your first tri, it's not worth paying a bunch of money and you can probably wear what you have...My first season I swam in a speedo, pulled on capris for the bike and a tank for the run. Lots of women do some variation of that, and I generally don't need any padding for bike rides shorter than 20 miles or so. I didn't buy a wetsuit until the next year and a trisuit the following year....go with whatever's comfortable, I say, but if you want new stuff, see some suggestions below.

That's awesome!!! The sprint races are so variable...do you have your 2008 schedule mapped out yet?

That's a great swimming pace! I hear you about the open water practice - my buddies and I are in nasty Lake Michigan every week from Memorial Day to Labor Day and it helps immensely. I usually go without my westuit once the water temp is above 50 so I can work a little harder...

Just one more won't hurt!!!!

I've had great luck buying stuff at the end of the season online at trisports.com, all3sports.com, swimoutlet.com and teamestrogen.com (girl stuff). Got a QR full sleeve wetsuit for 65% off, and I often get the past season's tri apparel for good deals. I'm on the chunkier side, so it's possible that my sizes are in stock longer than average sizes...

Most def

Ditto on what Cactus said...a lot more goes into a tri than a road race. But it makes tri season very painful, especially if you need to buy equipment and clothes.

I am having a great time reading everyone's goals! I'm going to try and get some together myself. No running for me today, but I powerwalked with my aunts for about 3 miles, so that was a small something while doing family bonding...

Feel better Noni and Billie!

Just got back from 5 miles in 43:53 (8:47/mile). My legs are feeling tired, but I reckon they should be. Playing hookey from work. Actually, I have a couple vacation days left, and my back was wonky last night and this morning, so that was all the excuse I needed. I laid in bed and watched Meatballs.

Good luck! Just enjoy yourself!

I can't remember exactly what my goals were at the end of last year. I know I had some. I think one was to run 1,500 miles this year. I'm over 1,700 right now, so check. I'm pretty sure another was to get revenge on Teh Pig. That's a big check. I think I wanted a 10k PR, which I got in July -- 46:10. I'm not sure what else.

As far as goals for next year, I'm not sure. Definitely getting revenge at Chicago is a biggy. Mileage-wise, I dunno. If I had another year like this one, that would be great. I wouldn't mind getting up to a 70-mile week during marathon training. I also would like to set a 5k PR.

Those are tough. Mine seem to suffer for my running sometimes.

Oi, let Brandy flirt if she wants to! Even if it's just with an idea.
Is it copying if I go with what the GreatGreenberg says?

no run for me. I'm in between hockey games right now. both D. and C. are in different tournaments today. 4 games for sure. 7 probable. I need to charge my butt warmer again.

Hey all:

Long time, no chat. Busy, busy in our house this week.

I got out Saturday for an easy 5, then a short interval workout where I was chased by 2 dogs. Then Sunday metup with Solar for a nice 7.

That put me at about 20 for a recovery week last week, which was probably a bit high, so I took Monday and Tuesday off and did an easy 3 last night. The shin is now feeling pretty good again.

Christmas was great fun, and DW and I and the kids had a blast. We hosted a brunch and a dinner, which was probably a bit too much.

Then I ended up with some gastritis or something yesterday and was in the bathroom all night. Frackers! That was no fun and I'm sporting some stylin' black eyes today!

Hopefully an easy 3 or 4 tonight if the stomach holds up.

2007 Goals
0. Stay injury free and have fun. Well, I had fun!!
1. PR at all major distances. Done
2. 5K - 17's - Beat it.
3. 10m - Sub 62 at Broad St? Beat it.
4. HM - 1:22 Beat it.
5. Distance - Somewhere around 2K. I will be around 2250ish.
6. Weight - 140s Worked out pretty well.

I think the moral of my 2007 goals is to sandbag your goals in your end of year posting so you can blow them away. Seriously, it was good year.

2008 Goals
0. Keep having fun and be smarter about recovery time. I had 2 decent injuries this year and I'd rather avoid those.

1. My only goal for the first half of the year is the 5k. I am going to focus on this pretty much exclusively through the spring season and focus all my training on peaking for a few 5ks and trying to really let it rip. I will do actual speedwork for the first time and I'm planning a lot more VO2 work than I've done in the past.

I have sub goals for the 5k, like just getting more comfortable racing, setting a PR, breaking 80% age grade, but the biggie is 15:59. I don't know if I can accomplish that this season or not - but I am putting it out there as the goal.

2. Second half of the year - who knows.

I honestly do not remember what my 2007 goals were.

Here are my 2007 accomplishments:

1. I kicked ass in HM #3, the Flying Pig. PR'd, posted negative splits, and the final 5K was very close to my 5K PR. This was a race that I expected to kick MY ass because I am not used to running on hills.

2. I did fairly well in HM #4, Philadelphia, despite being undertrained. It wasn't a PR, but I managed to run a smart race and my splits were relatively consistent.

3. Ran my 1st 10M race in horrible heat and humidity. Glad I did it, but next time I might stick with the 5 miler.

4. Won my age group for a 2-race series. So what if there was only one other person in my age group, my combined time beat hers and I won the prize of $40 off a pair of running shoes. One of those races was run on an icy path with single digit temps and below zero windchills.

5. Ran my first off-road race (a combined cross-country/trail 5K).

6. Got to meet a bunch of my imaginary running friends.

I ran fewer miles in 2007 than I did in 2006, thanks to my messed up late summer/autumn training.

I still have to think about my plans for 2008, other than to set a new PR for total miles.

All-righty then....
Great minds and all that... I'll start...

Winter My hands are warm and they don't need to be recharged.

Hi gang!

I get to post on the running thread because...I actually *ran* today.

Not a lot, but a bit over 2 miles. East. (or am I supposed to say sleazy now? I'm lost. Where's our 30's dictionary???)

I might hit the gym later tonight...we'll see what's in store. I'm off today and kind of enjoying being a bit lazy.

I got nothin' else right now. I am ashamed to even get into the conversation of 2007 goal results...I guess I should just be thankful I'm not injured going into 2008 and think about what this next year should hold. I'll get back to you on this one.

I'm hungry. (shocking, I know...teehee)

Later taters!

Ann

Hi Everyone!

Hope your holidays were grand; I've been pretty good about running this week despite having to really squeeze some in! I've been lurking from time to time as well.

The best run was a quick 5k pace 3.2 on Christmas Day and it was just gorgeous out. I felt truly festive and it was a good run, too.

I've been on the TM lots since we have oodles of snow. I'm now thinking I may have to move my training to mostly indoors and in the morning. Two things I'm not great at, but harder training=easier racing and I'm finding after work is not working (he he) for me.

I have also found that watching the Biggest Loser whilst running is hugely motivating.

Goals for last year:

I truly didn't have any other than to break 25 in a 5k and I did not.

This year:

Spring race I have not decided on, yet.
Around 2 hr HM in Madison
TC again. That freaking Summit farking, fracking Hill.
There is always a weight loss goal as well
Meet a bunch of 30's!

Merry, merry and I hope Santa was good to all!

MN Peeps: I'm not doing the Winter Waddle as we'll be out of town, but have fun and don't slip!

Melis

Hi Hawki!!!

Good afternoon!

Did 3 this morning with my neighbor and my dog. I think he is getting used to these nice morning jaunts (though he is still stopping at the neighbors house :roll_eyes

I had 2 goals for 2007:

1. Run a half marathon. I did 2 this summer and I must say I love that distance.
2. Improve my 5K time. I did that, but there's always room for improvement.

2008

1. Run a marathon (Delaware, May 18th). My training officially starts jan. 4th.
2. 5K under 24 minutes.
3. Better eating habits. I heart junk food.

Feel better Heather, HH, Noni, and Hawki
