I’ve been dealing with this persistent pain in my shin from running, and it’s really starting to get me down. It feels like it might be shin splints, but I’m not sure. I’ve been resting and icing it, but the pain keeps coming back whenever I try to run again. Should I be doing specific exercises to help it heal, or is it better to just take a longer break from running? Normally running 4 miles a day. Mid 50s so I should have plenty of miles left in me.

Update: Slowly easing back into a mile per day, occasionally two. I've been using a blood flow wrap to help. Using before activity tends to do the trick. Not exactly back at that 4 mile a day mark, though am working towards it. Doing more stretching exercises had also been helping a ton too.

Update # 2: Had a re-injury happen recently. Guess a bit too much stretching along with some light walking. I've started to wrap the area with some KB tape. Its been helping quite a bit with keeping the area more stable. Been looking at some blood flow stimulation devices along with cold therapy as well.

I suffered from shin splints a couple of times during my running career due to pushing my training too hard (being overwieight probably didn't help either). The only thing I really found to help was an appropriate amount of rest and a gradual reintroduction to running outdoors. Wiser runners than me would use an eliptical machine to maintain their fitness during similar episodes.

Thank you for your response and I hear you, I don't shy away from an extra bite here and there too. I've gradually gotten back into activity again though. I'd say mostly from focusing on my own stretching exercises and using a Blood flow stimulation device to help. (really couldn't give enough praise to my King Brand wrap). I started just with some light activity walking and have been keeping stable. I have a small trip planned with family soon so being able to engage with them while I can, matters a lot to me.
