First Disney marathon and first marathon since '01. Had to cancel Rock N Roll San Diego in '06 due to an injury.<br><br>
Goals for Disney<br>
1. BQ @ 3:35 (old man)<br>
2. Improve masters pr of 3:20<br>
3. Top 5 in 50-59 age group to get medal<br>
4. 3:10 - race charts showed 2:58-3:05 (anything above 3:10 = failure)<br>
5. 3:00 on a perfect day/race<br><br>
Arrived Fri afternoon and checked into Pop Disney resort. Saturday ran a 4 mile shake down run and rested the rest of the day. Got up about 2:30 to prepare, dress, eat, etc. Got on the bus to the starting line about 3:30. Our bus driver was still asleep too as she missed a couple turns. No problem as it was warmer on the bus and comfortable.<br><br>
Started in A corral where I met Kestrou briefly. Also met pacerchris who was running the 3:20 group. I lined up between the 3:10 and 3:20 group. Goal pace was 6:50.<br><br>

I missed the 5th place medal by 2:30 and I gave that back the 2nd half of the race. I did BQ and will go '09, I improved my master's pr by 6:10 (only run 2 masters marathons), failed at my 3:10 and 3:00. So the <b>it</b>took a hit (for explanation go to master's thread<img alt="smile.gif" src="http://files.kickrunners.com/smilies/smile.gif">).<br><br>
What went wrong? Overinflated estimation of ability? Underfit? Weather? Just the wrong day? Or combination of above. The interesting thing is that I'm not passionate about doing well or badly in this race. When I have a "bad" race it is immediately targeted for revenge the next year. Not so this time. Looking for a late fall marathon somewhere.<br><br>
p.s. The real hero of our family is the dw (the lovely and gracious mrs ccrunner. This is her 3rd marathon and was never an athlete until last few years. Her previous 2 marathons were in the 5:15 range. She increaded mileage and we were certain she was in shape for a 4:45-5:00. 2 weeks before the race 5 miles into a 13 mile easy run she got a pain in her shin. 2 days later we take her for an mri. No stress fracture but severe shin splint (her first). Doc says to run if she can stand the pain as she won't hurt it any worse. Swimming for 2 weeks and she can walk without a limp. At mile 5 she is in tears due to the pain but won't quit. She walks, runs, shuffles to the finish in 6:31 or so and gets her medal. along the way she meets and talks to a lot of people. One such man was a real inspiration to her. A man likely in his 60's told her he was struck by a car riding his road bike last August and broke his hip. As some of the master's runners know; we lost one of our 60's bike riders to an auto accident about the same time last year. The previous year the doctor told him he had terminal cancer. He ran, walked, and shuffled with a cane to the finish. I am more proud of her earning the medal than I am of mine. Sure glad I didn't drop out of the race.<br><br>
