That stuff is foul. I'm sorry if that offends someone, but that's what I think. If I find a recipe that uses it, I immediately discount that recipe as valid and will. not. try it.

Ingredients in Cool Whip:

Ingredients: WATER, CORN SYRUP, HYDROGENATED VEGETABLE OIL (COCONUT AND PALM KERNEL OILS), HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, LESS THAN 2% OF SODIUM CASEINATE (FROM MILK), NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR, XANTHAN AND GUAR GUMS, POLYSORBATE 60, SORBITAN MONOSTEARATE, BETA CAROTENE (COLOR).

Just use real cream people! Saturated fat be damned, the trans fats in this stuff are probably worse for you, not to mention that they're made out of coconut and palm kernel oils, which are probably the worst for your health.

I will listen to counter arguments, but I doubt I will ever consider cool whip a food.

Whipped cream is way, way better tasting, IMO.

NO! Gingerbread is right. CW should be banned. Real whipped cream is where it's at. Plus you get that nice shffffffft! sound when you press the nozzle. And you are free to do "tap hits" if there is nothing else in the fridge to snack on.....just sayin'...

I like to freeze it between graham crackers for a faux ice cream treat.

But I buy the tub, not the spray kind. I like the tub kind better.

When you don't feel like whipping it up by hand (or mixer) canned stuff will do, plus you get the whippets after for those who do that kind o' thang.

Generally, I like to make it myself. Maybe JohnnyB doesn't have a mixer, witchypoo. I can attest to his not laziness, he's a Super Badass! Maybe that's why he has no time to whip.

Well, as Gingerbread, I prefer to be lathered in real whipped cream, if that's to what you're referring...

But without coolwhip you wouldn't have salads like this one:

Orange Pretzel Salad
No need to come to my rescue. I'm a big boy. Witchipoo is obviously a purist. In fairness, I've been turned away by my wife who, like Eve, hooked me on the simplicity of the can. I also now call pop soda, stand "on line" instead of "in line", drink skim milk instead of 2%, yadda, yadda, yadda. Witchipoo you have no idea, and this is the evolved johnny. Imagine the cave man I was before.

My mom used to whip it herself. But I always thought it was a bit bland, as she did not add any sugar. WTF? It had a great texture, that's for sure. She would even put the metal bowl and beaters in the freezer for an hour before mixing it. That is probably a bit over the top, but it was part of her protocol.

I do this, too. There are certain pure foods that I enjoy making, almost as an art form. Perfectly whipped cream (never overwhipped, and not always to stiff peaks, depending on the use) with just the right amount of flavorings (e.g., sugar, extract, liquors) is a passion of mine. My DH doesn't mind at all.

And why can't one use whipped cream rather than the abomination that is cool whip in this recipe? Really. I would, although I would also probably use graham crackers or similar rather than pretzels, too, despite the name. I also have no idea why it's called a salad when it seems more like a dessert. Boy, I'm feeling nit-picky today...sorry

Sure you're a big boy, but you're also my teammate I felt compelled to defend a bit.

You mother didn't use vanilla? That's a nice addition. And chilled bowl and beaters is a nice way to do it, although not necessarily required.

Sisters in food!

I probably should have used "slathered" rather than "lathered" but I believe we both know to what I am referring.
