Some people aren't eligible to or can't give blood donations, there's no way to make teams even in that regard without making some people uncomfortable I think. I know you can get proxy donors, but I feel that when it comes to blood and sweat, only the sweat should garner points for the VRAA.

Billy.... all these requests must be driving you crazy

For this VRAA or any future VRAA, I'd be more than happy with just counting running miles only... seems like it would surely make things simpler. I think once it's extended into cross training everyone wants to get their share of points... just like me and my racquetball.... and scoring can get complicated.

I'm happy to support the blood drive in this forum. That was done last round and it would be my pleasure to continue in that way. That said, I don't think I want to give points for it. I won't completely close the door, but because of the question of access, I think I'd want to give people lots of notice and maybe an entire round in which to donate. That seems like a lot to take on for my first race. Let me get one successful event under my belt before I do anything too interesting.

The requests keep me hopping, for sure. I'm happy people are willing to invest the kind of passion they evidently do into this simple game.

The VRAA has to be open to everyone that wants to play, runners and non-runners, high volume trainers and low volume trainers alike. If we were going to do something like running points only, it would have to be a "sideshow" or "division" of the regular race. If that's the case, I'd want to be sure the database could support that. It might be a fun ancillary aspect to try. It's something I'm thinking about for the future.

I'm already thinking about Rounds 8 and 9 and how to make them smashing successes. Keep the ideas coming!

Billy - thanks for your consideration - as an oncology nurse and a runner, I have always appreciated the support of both groups toward each other. Donation over the entire VRAA makes sense and I would be more than happy to tally this, if that help at all!!!

I think a blood drive would be cool if just for a token amount of points-- like the race bonus we did before, not sure if that's still in effect. (5 pts) Not enough that people who cannot are really missing out (I cannot this round, for the record, being pregnant) but it supports something good and people who donate blood cannot exercise that day. Plus, it's not like someone can donate blood every day, there's limitations. Even if someone has not donated blood lately, they'll probably only get a chance once during the round.

Really, 5 pts for blood donation is not going to make a difference, but it's a nice gesture towards a good action

To me, it seems that the VRAA at this site has ALWAYS included other activities.
Yeah, it takes some people not being ridiculous about their points and only scoring things that by good conscience should really count. But I like the system. We have developed a good system to deal with it here; and that system can evolve rather painlessly.
We have that 1 hour max to make sure people are not weight-training across America.

The fact is, we have a lot of triathletes here. Cycling is not for them a cross training endeavor. It's part of their sport. And it absolutely affects how much you can run in a week because it all tires you out. We have former runners who can no longer run-- APRR Chuck comes to mind.

Now, occasionally we have people stretching it a bit -- but on the most part, people are reasonable and leave out their heavy housework

And, in the end, we are all doing this largely for ourselves, and fun. There is no Mercedes on the line-- or even crew jackets to the leading team. It's motivational -- and motivational in every step, spin, or stroke - to get out there and work your tush off!

*snorts* Do I get the Athena womans bonus + the Pregnant woman's bonus... Plus the slow chick's bonus since I'm on the course so long..

Wait, are you getting all this down???

Probably to late for this. I have an issue about the bonus points. If you don't have easy access to a pool nor have a bicycle, you can't earn the bonus points unless you are willing to fork over some cash at the local health club. I am kind of thinking that there should be an alternate activity to earn the bonus points. Larry

Larry,

I understand your points and they are well taken. I do want to try out different things each round in order to keep the game fresh and make each time more memorable. I'm also curious to see how people will like it; that's all data for improving future rounds.

Thanks,
Billy

I don't have access to a pool so that's a point I'll miss out on, but I figure if I do 5 minutes extra worth of stretching that weekend it'll make up for it, so I'm not too concerned about the unfairness aspect of it. I was curious for the bike-riding challenge if it has to be actual biking outside or if exercise bikes/spinning classes would count for the bonus points?

I don't follow this logic at all.
The people who swim regularly, they likely have access to that pool because they're paying dues - gym or Y or whatnot.
If you're looking to earn bonus points, there are other ways to do that. Who says you have to cram out extra points? You signed up at a certain level. It should be a level that you can maintain with your weekly routine. Bonus is just that. Find something you can do, or push yourself a bit within your means to pick up a point or three.

For those looking at the VRAA as a reason to start a new kind of exercise, then pick one - swimming, or whatever, and start doing that as part of a monthly routine. For some, that would mean paying dues at a gym to start swimming. Then it becomes more than just a push for points and instead becomes something healthy you're doing for yourself. any amount you have to pay is then an investment.

Bonus points for this weekend?

We get bonus points for doing an alternative workout. If someone bikes and swims does that count as doing an alternative workout? or do we have to do something that doesn't fit into a category?

Maybe I should have said anything that would score points under Alt. workouts in the Scoring categories? That's what I meant, anyway.

VII. Alternate workouts**: 1 pt for every 5 minutes (maximum of 60 minutes, or 12 points, per day)

** Alternate workouts: This category is open to interpretation. To a point. Below are the suggested activities. The guidance with this category is to count time spent working and not rest time.

- Yoga/Pilates
- Weighlifting/Circuit training
- Core/Abdominal work
- Team sports

This does mean that workouts from other categories will not score bonus points. This time, yoga/pilates/weightlifting/etc. get bonus points, but no bonus points for running, elliptical trainers, swimming, on anything else.

Myself, I plan to get my bonus points for Dance Dance Revolution!

And??? How did you score in the Groove Radar?

Hey, kind of tight on time here so sorry if it's been mentioned. Does the bonus only count for one day of the weekend?
