Anyone ever do anything similar to this?

Genentech Climb California 2008

I think I'm nuts for considering it, but just wanted to see what you all thought...

Moon- there is a similar event here in Columbus. Having walked up 17 flights of stairs into my hotel the day before the Flying Pig (inoperable elevators), I think I'll personally pass.

Well, she only got there because it's a leap year. Oh wait...

Darn, I guess I won't make it. Maybe I can get in for 2009... if I have a sex change before then...

Originally, I was going to run tonight with my neighbor -- the one who dragged me along at a 7:40 pace last Wednesday. But he cancelled on me. I must admit, I am not upset at that... Now I can go out for 7 or 8 miles at a fairly easy pace...

They just had a stair-climb event here this past weekend...I have friends who have done it and they say it's a good thing the Lung Association sponsors it because they needed a new set after sucking hallway dust running up those stairs. Both my training buddies that did it have opted to not return the following year, so it must not have been the greatest experience (and the $75 entry fee/required pledge for 5 minutes of agony didn't help).

Isn't Genentech the company that made the terminators that take over the post-apocolyptic future?!

Darn that Jen and Myron!

So, I go out for my lunch run and it's beautiful. 60F. Nice. Shorts and t-shirt weather. I get going on my first mile and I'm thinking about the great runs these two have been throwing down. I cross the river at the one mile mark and it's pretty decent: 7:40. I pick it up as I hit the bike path heading towards Springfield: 7:23. I turn back towards Eugene and re-enter the park along the mill race: 7:14. A kid named Jordan McNamara cuts in on the path in front of me as we go through the park on the bark trail: 6:55. We pass three of our football coaches and in passing one remarks to me that his bet is on the kid! Luckily young Mr McNamara pulls off and heads North as I continue to chug along, spurred on by my-coworkers lack of faith in experience over youth: 6:51. Now I'm thinking about shutting it down, but I figure that I should at least take it swiftly through the 10k mark: 7:06/1:34- (44:47). At this point I slow down and finish in about 7:3x pace for a total of 7.5 miles averaging 7:16/mi.

That is some serious talent to be running with, very cool link. Nice run by the way!

Don't forget about Pacer just casually mentioning that he mixed in 8 miles at tempo during his run--6ish pace. Wow.

"Running with" is a stretch. I was about 20 meters back. He just glided along like he was jogging.

Pacer, Tom and Trev are simply at another level. I wouldn't ever compare myself to them! Though if you keep up the hard work and remain injury-free I wouldn't be surprised at all if you close the gap on them significantly.

Ha ha ha...I wish! I've got this damn uterus holding me back here--I'd have to envoke some type of age/gender grading to work that out.

I'll be more than happy if I can just hang with some of the faster women down here. There have been a couple of pretty quick additions to the ladies' races this year, some national standard talent. Heck, at this point, I feel special if they even bother to say hello to me.

Don't underestimate your capabilities. Hook up with a decent coach and start doing a little bit of speed work and I think you'll keep seeing significant improvements. My niece ran 19:05 for 5k in HS XC, and she wasn't doing any long distance at the paces you are running. She did however do a lot of strength workouts in the mid-6 range.

If you have a tolerance for pain and discomfort, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see you running in the low 18s next year at this time. Honest to goodness.
