Back from my workout - will have to read the thread later as I need a shower.

Since I'm missing treadmill class tonight I decided to do my own speed work.

Ending up doing a nice threshold workout.

-20 minute warm up
-5 x 3:00 @ 10K pace with 1 minute recovery in between each one.
-Incline started at 0% for the first one then went to 1%, 2%, 3% and then back to 0% for the last.
-Cool down to 1 hour total time.

Nice.

well, she does like a malty beer more than I do for starters, but if I am an asshat, she married me!

Dude. Me too!

(((Maria))) Holy carp, woman!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Here's another one, just for good luck. (((Maria)))

Good luck today, PTom!

Nice new avatar pic, LL and the Gang.

Volleyball sucked ass last night (see my poll in the PRT), but I did have time for a very quick tempo run before the game. 2.7 miles in 21:24. I felt great!! Best run in a long time. And shortest run in a long time. Coincidence???

QOD
I always want a PR. Every race. I know I can't achieve that, but if I'm not trying to PR then what's the point of racing? You know? I'm not going to win, so I may as well race against myself.

QOD1:

March: There are some 5ks around and I may dive into one or more, but I haven't really looked.
April 6: Danbury CT HM. Probably. Haven't registered yet, but it'll fit nicely into my schedule.
May 4: Eugene OR Marathon. Reigstered
June 1: San Diego Rock N Roll Marathon. Registered
Sep 1: New Haven 20k. Definite.
Nov 2: NYC Marathon. If I can get in thru the lottery.

I'll also try to throw in some more 5ks in the summer, but I haven't thought about that yet. I'd also like to do a 10k, since I've never done one before, which means automatic PR!

If I don't get into New York, I don't know what I'll do in the fall. Maybe Hartford CT on Oct 11. And there's still a chance that I may throw in one more random marathon in the fall, such as Omaha NE on Sep 28.

QOD2:

I don't spend too much time thinking about my time goals. Typically I just want to beat my previous best, or maybe improve up to the next round number. For example, I ran 3:47:27 in Alabama... so I'll set 3:45 as my goal for Eugene.

Just think, we have options now to registering for big races ...you can do it drunk or trippin' on fish toxins. Seriously though, weird shit.

QOD - Next up will depend on how my hammy is feeling, I don't wanna go too crazy. With that in mind:

March 9 - NY Colon Cancer Challenge 15K
April 6 - St. Louis HM
May 25 - Madison Marathon (or HM, depending)
June 22 - Lake Compounce HM (CT)
July 20 - Carneros HM (Napa to Sonoma) *looks to be close to full
August 3 - San Francisco HM *this would be an alternate to Carneros
September 1 - New Haven 20K (CT)
September 12-14 - Reach The Beach Relay (NH)
October 12 - Chicago Marathon, part duex

QOD 2 - I make a prediction based off my current training and similar races around the time of a goal race. I also consider the terrain and energy involved.

Jen - my thoughts on running NYC, like you said, everyone should run it once in their life. You'll be seeded high enough to avoid much of the crowd going over the bridge at the start and from then on you'll sail through the most amazing neighborhoods & crowds. It still brings me shivers. As for the pricey side, yes it's that but I can help out with housing & transportation options if you have questions. Also, we've got an aerobed and room for 2 to sleep comfortably

QOD Depends on the Clif schedule as always so I think it will be something local as a goal race. Assuming I can do this local HM in March as part of the buildup to Boston, I'll base the fall goal on how I do there and Boston - if I get a phat HM PR and run 2:45 in Boston, I'll probably try to beat the marathon time at Columbus or Air Force. If I run just OK at the HM, I'd look for a local HM and try to get a respectable time there.

I tell ya something I'd like to organize - an invitational 5,000 or 10,000 meters on the new track near my house. If i can get 2-4 groups of people at similar ability, we could have a few races...one group in the 34-38 minute 10k range, one in the 38-42 range, etc. That way it may actually be a race for everyone, not just people getting lapped. I'll serve some dodgey fish to my friends and talk them into it once they're hopped up on fish toxins.

QOD2 I've been racing long enough to know what is a good goal, what's stretch and what's stupid...then I pick something between stretch and stupid and train for that!! It's strange to think 2:45 sounds realistic to me...it's all in how I dice it up (I can do a bunch of 19:30 5k's, but 26 miles at 6:17? That's just dumb!) I must say - with two victories last year, I'm tempted to look for some smaller races and go for the W again a few times this year!! The 10k I hope to do next weekend could be a possibility - I got 2nd (by a long ways) 2 years ago and a relatively clsoe 3rd last year. Maybe I can move up to the top step of the podium this time!

Sweet! You got a race named after you!

I meant to comment on that.

QOD2: I go by past performance and how I'm feeling at the time. I'm still at the level where I think I can improve my time in most races just because I'm still a work in progress.

Jen My 2 cents on your racing ideas (other than doing them all!)

If you're going to be there at Duluth, you may as well do the whole thing at Grandma's. Is it already full? 7 weeks after Boston with all the mileage you do now, you'll be ready to race again, and if the weather is crap at Boston you can just cruise through that and then race Grandma's.

NYC vs. Philly - You have to do NYC at least once in your life, like Maria says. But - I wouldn't be shocked if they hold the Olympic Marathon Trials there again next time in 2011 so you could save the trip for that year. With your speed, you have the luxury of always being qualified to get into NYC. Philly is a great race - less crowded & a faster course than NYC, loads of 30's folks, and the pacers there in the 3:10-3:20 range are pretty hot (I'm not a definite yet, but I enjoyed it so much I'll put it on my wish list for this year). It's the week before T Day, but you could always microwave the turkey if you run short of time!
I don't know...for the free stuff, the food, the beer, the glory, the commaradarie with other runners...the marked course. To support a good cause. Cause all the cool kids are doing it.

I'm as competitive as the next guy, probably more so, and yes, I'm not competiting for age group awards or overalls, so I guess PRs is all I have to shoot for. But, as I push the PRs down, it's not realistic to PR at every race. Sometimes, a good day with a good time, that's not a PR is good enough.

You are correct, and I agree 100% that racing is loads of fun for all those reasons (except beer... I just don't like beer). But the question was about setting goals for your races, so I answered it that way. My goal is always to do my absolute best on race day. I don't always accomplish it, and sometimes that's OK. But that's my goal, anyway. Does that make sense?

Depends on whether or not IronHubby does Chicago and/or if I go to cheer in Chicago. I'll keep you posted!!! (And thanks.)
