Count me in! I think I can maybe do 2 of the no knees kind (I refuse to describe them as 'non-girly') total. With knees, I do 4 sets of 8 on my chest days. I'd like to be able to do even 2 sets of 8 of the no knees kind.

How far down does one go for the full-on push-up? I have the same problem with my wrists hurting, so I'll try this tonight with my dumbbells. Does it matter what size dumbbells?

Hah! Yeah, I think you have to go to the point where your nose dips into the water. I like watching the flick with Demi Moore as a Navy Seal. I cannot remember the name of it...ah, "G.I. Jane". She was doing some kick-ass PUs in that film.

I have some 10lb-ers. That'll do, thanks!

You want to make sure your weights are big enough that you don't hurt your knuckles!

I am not sure how far down you should go, but my brother, the Army guy, says you should be able to touch your nose to the ground. And in karate, we would put our boxing glove under our faces and had to touch that with our nose.

Both of which are about 10" farther down than I can go!!

So, SGH, our resident fitness guru... can we do these every day? Or should we be resting a day in between?

i did 4 today. I did not go down very far, definitly no nose on the ground! LOL. I am still easing into things

I have read several different ways to do the full pushup [not the yoga tricep pushup] I do them MY WAY, and since I'm not in the police academy or the military, I'm not getting graded for accuracy! HA!

I keep looking forward, not up or down, so that the chin is actually closest to the ground [rather than the nose]

I don't DON'T go down farther than parallel to the elbows-shoulders to keep stress of those areas at a minimum.

this is my way....not perfect, but it works!

It's worse than I thought! I could do ONE pushup like that. Yikes. I wonder how long it would take me to be able to do 30.

When my coach first started having me do push ups, i could barely do 5 girlie ones. After months of that, i tried ONE manlie and almost died and was unable to do it.

Just like abs -- you're only using your body weight as resistance, and it shouldn't be enough to cause the kind of microtearing that needs more repair time. Of course if you're just starting and very sore after, build up to daily.

As far as how far to go down, you can go low, but watch for pain in the shoulders (see WTPJ's description). The main thing is to keep good form vs. having your form go all wonky just to touch the ground.

Now drop and give me what you got!

What is "good form" for these here thingies (not Liam's kind of thingies, either )

I added a little to the directions I found on the Web. http://www.gimme20.com/

Getting the starting form: Lie chest-down with your hands at shoulder level, palms flat on the floor and slightly more than shoulder width apart, feet together and parallel to each other.

(From here, come up into the body position in the first picture.)

Lowering phase: Lower body until chest touches the floor. Try not to bend your back. Keep your knees off the floor and inhale as you bend your arms. Keep your head up and looking forward ahead of you.

(Exhale to press back up into the starting position.)

Thanks, SGH! Of course, well endowed wimmens have an edge because when the chest touches the floor with some, they're not as far down as others. Heh.

I didn't get a chance to try them last night. Out late at the moovies. I hope to try this evening.

That doesn't help me any! But I know what you mean.

I think I will do some pilates and then try some this morning.
