good morning all!

Well, obvoiusly yesterday was very warm. At the start it was in the mid 70s with dew points in the low 70s. Ew. Race (Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon) could not start early as the first miles were on a county road and were not lit well. So, it started at 8 a.m. The race is all put on by volunteers so they were not able to respond to the increased heat with additional water stops...not good. After the start, I got on the bus and took a ride to mile 10.5 where I would start leg #3 of the relay race. By the time people started to come through at 10.5, everyone was drenched and not looking too hot. I saw Baggs and he was not happy. Finally when my team member came in at about 1:50 into the race, I would estimate that 70% of the people were already walking. This is 10.5 miles in. An emergecy vehicle had already gone down the road to pick up someone in the ditch. not good

I started out and my legs were screaming at me and then immediately I had to go to the bathroom (i was well hydrated ). Unfortunately, the next break area was almost 2 miles in. I was thinking to myself, oh my, I might not even finish my leg. I was able to stretch out the legs during the potty break and after that it went ok. I was getting a bit overheated when I saw they were handing out ice and remembered a trick I was told...Stick ice down your bra. Man, this is the best thing EVER in a hot race. It was like my internal temp dropped 5 degrees and I got a second wind. I backed off my pace so I wouldn't be sick (running about 930s or so) and easily came into the check point. I had told my 4th runner that I would run her leg with her. It was her first real race and with the conditions, I thought she would need some company. After i picked her up, I told her "let's have a goal that we don't walk, except through water stations". She was up for it so we started to truck along. Almost right away someone was handing out ice. "Put this down your bra!" She looked at me pretty weird but did it and she was also amazed at the change. I think that during that last leg I always had ice in my bra and it made a world of difference!!!! Anyways, we finished strong and met our goal. Our team finished in about 4:45 which isn't too bad since I was the only person prior to signing up that ran on a regular basis.

Review of the race (or at least what I ran of it 15.7):
Great crowd support!!!! They were awesome, totally awesome. It was similar to Fargo in that respect and as I wasn't racing it, I was able to enjoy and interact with the crowd. There were high fives all around!
Terrible - coordination - roads were not closed off making the runners run most of the race on the shoulder of the road.
Not enough water stops
Not enough volunteers for crowd control
The last 2 miles were on the biking path on the lake and we had to dodge bikers and other rec. runners. Not cool.

Big thanks to Melissa for checking on me and giving us the low down on the other racers!!

Korbels Great job. FYI you beat Sven!!!

Maria Good call on pulling out. It wasn't worth getting sick over and you have another chance real soon. Smart girl!! Good news that little sis is out of the hospital

Pacer Amazing that you were able to hit the pacing goal in those conditions. you the man

If I forgot anyone, I apologize!!!
