Keep it up Roly.

I was out for a long run this morning. It was chilly in the wind and my hands were frozen stiff. I stumbled on to the best way to warm up after running in the cold: run on a tread mill. So, after two hours of running outside, I capped it off with 10-min jog inside. I think I'll do this every time now.

Thanks for the birthday wishes ... I don't know where the time went. I'm coping as best as I can. After being sick for more than two months, my voice is coming back and I've stopped coughing, though still on asthma meds. I don't envision starting to run anytime soon ... let's just start with the pool a few times a week first. I can run that marathon another time month.

I won't go crazy. You know me my middle name is caution.

This cold weather is really making it clear that I am a sissy. I am not sure when I last ran outside. I even bang out long runs on my treadmill. It feels like I am getting further away from what first drew me into this sport ... I'll try to get outside a couple of times this week.

On a positive note I had a good TM run on Monday. It was supposed to be an easy run, but I felt so damn good that I kept upping the pace, averaging 4:50/k for one hour. I felt relaxed the whole time and had to stay reasonable at the end because I was itching to hammer out something under 4:00/k for the last mile. I didn't feel too bad the day after and got in my easy run without too much trouble.

I think we're running 2x4x1:40 tonight with Dorys, so I'll see if Monday's exuberance will give me the dead leg.

.. .. . one of those on the road weeks for me, St John's allowed me the treat of running from my hotel to the top of signal hill, less than 5 miles in the dark . .. light snow, uphill etc etc. Got stranded .. . due to a snow storm in Merc's neck of the woods.

Skied yesterday am . ..

Out yesterday afternoon to do the 10k to the couch trail, in fresh soft snow, . . .. ouf! 20kms = 2:23. Really tough on the quads, tough on the abductors/adductors tough on everything .. . . so as I had promised my running partner we'd do it again this morning . .. .dragged my tired arse back out into the snow . .. turned around 7kms . .. 1:30 ish .. . feeling out of shape! feeling the need for a routine/schedule .. . I miss living next to gym.

5 days of running for me this week averaging about 2.5- 3miles per run during the week. Todays run was a whopping 4 miles. I have a little hip pain at the start of each run but thankfully is seems to deminish as I start to warm up. Fingers are crossed hoping 2011 is my comeback year.

First week back at work and already I had to work throught two lunch hours and got called into a meeting with upper management at 5:00 pm on Friday. It feels good to be needed again.

enjoy the week-end and superbowl tonight.

My wife is in Costa Rica, enjoying herself while I am home, not quite alone since I have the two girls with me. It is turning into a hell of a lot more work than I thought.

I managed to squeeze in a run before the girls work up today. I ran for just 40 minutes at half-marathon pace. I felt a little nauseous (not sure if it from lack of sleep or the pace - I hope it's the lack of sleep...) but otherwise it went well.

Hanging in there...

Sorry I missed you all on Wednesday.

Hi KZ - how are things, surviving without the missus around ? Pas facile to juggle work, small children and training.

Roly - you still steady with the training ? Hope things are going well with your new contract.

I'm still doing the cross training deal, inserted a couple of 15 min - 20 min TM runs here and there, not bad. Saw someone on Sunday morning doing a 3 hour indoor run...could not wrap my mind around it...

Any one going to the Ile B races this coming weekend ?

Sorry I missed everyone the other day. I hope everyone had a good time.

New qualifying standards for Boston:

In short, staggered registration dates based on qualifying times will be used.

In 2013, qualifying times will be reduced across the board (for men and women of all age groups) by five minutes.

Thoughts?

I'll be running the Tuques bleue snowshoe race tomorrow evening. Ah... the things I do for food. It'll be my first time running in snowshoes. My goal, following my team meeting, is to finish as quickly as possible to secure a table with seating for 15 people in the dining hall.

Is anyone planning on running in LaSalle on March 27th?

TB

I've gotten into a routine with the kids and it is much more manageable than last week, but I haven't been able to run much. I did manage to complete a long treadmill run on Saturday, but there were some costs.

I started my long run after I put the girls to sleep for the afternoon nap. I thought I had at least 1.5 hours, but they decided to wake up after only 1 hour. So I set a Dora DVD on repeat play and dumped the kids in front of the TV. They did really well for 45 minutes and I should have stopped when they showed signs of restlessness... but no, I got greedy and went for it all, shooting for a full 25K long run as scheduled.

The damage? The younger one escalated her roughhousing to full-on biting and kicking and while I was twisting myself around to defuse the situation, I fell off the treadmill, hard, right at their feet. No one got hurt, but anytime I ask the girls if I can go running all I hear is "No, no, no, daddy, no!" So running on a treadmill is another activity I have to add to Hide-From-My-Kids list.

TB, I will probably run the 5K in Lasalle, see you there! Good luck in the snow this weekend, or will it be rain?

Boston, shmoston. What I really want is to be half my age and miler, so no Boston and no four quarters, studly fashion.

I like the strategy... I didn't know there was food being served. Why didn't you tell me? I may have registered!!! So what was served? I want the full race/food report!

I agree with Boston's new qualifying process. I still think the women's times are way slower than the men's. I think in the next 5-7 years, BAA will lower the times even more and it will become a more elite race.

Had a great run the other day, when I could actually see the road for the first time this winter... Feels so fast out there when you're not trudging through inches of slush. Watch out for ice tomorrow, temps will drop tonight and the streets will get icy....

Tempo run for me this morning.

It has been a while since I did a tempo run in the morning and even longer since I did one outside. Overall it was tough to run a harder effort in the morning. I was hoping to get down to half-marathon pace or effort, but I am pretty sure I was off the mark.

Gotta start getting serious about training! Spring races are looming.

KZ: I know how you feel. All my running is in the morning so I understand how you feel. I'm looking forward to racing against you in LaSalle - thanks for making it happen. I'm hoping to be able to run 18:30 ish on that day (March 27). The base is good but the speed has yet to take root.

TB

I missed my group workout last night because the babysitter never showed up. So instead of laps on an indoor track with plenty of folks for motivation, I had to settle for a lonely cold tempo run on the roads. Again, it felt like I got my pace down to half-marathon speed but after checking some distances and splits on gmaps, I was off the mark. I am blaming the cold.

I say that today is the last bitter-cold day for this winter. You can dust off the shorts, people, you'll need them in a couple of weeks :)

The Absolute Best Cheeseburger on the Planet .. . .. is to be had at The Pittsfield General Store, Pittsfield VT. Best served as dessert, the snowshoe marathon being the main course .. .. Luckily we missed yesterday's rain down in Vermont except for a a little light spitting most of the day. The snow was a little soft and sloppy towards the end of the day but apart from that the conditions were perfect .. . I went down on Friday night and slept in the big ol' barn at Amee farm . .. and was woken by the rooster at about 6am for a 8 am start. There was about 220 starters, most of which were there for the 10K "fun run" & the half .. . I think there were about 40 or so marathoners .. . Anyway the course is a 6,5 mile loop which is a zig-zag on single track up the side of a mountain, gorgeous scenery, steep at times, through the woods .. . you get to the top and barrel down the other side. The climb on the first loop took me about an hour and the descent about 35 mins. . .. . I was sort of trying to pace myself as I vaguely remember suffering at the end last year. Second lap .. . maybe 5mins slower. I was expecting the wheels to fall off on the third lap .. . but everything felt just fine. I watched one fitter younger runner stand at the top of the descent and cringe . .. his quads were mush from his first two loops . .. I passed with a grin. I passed a few more on the way down feeling no discomfort at all. On the last lap I figured that if I could get to the top in an hour and ten .. . and then down in under 45 mins I would finish in under 7 hours. So I tightened my snow shoes and decided to go for it .. . I probably was faster on the way up than the previous loop and when I got to the top I looked at my watch to find the battery had died . .. . argh!! So I decided to go for it and see how fast I could get back down to the finish . . . I was all alone, I passed just one more "runner" who was struggling to the end of his 3rd lap .. . As I didn't know what my time would be I just moved as fast as I could .. . . Got to finish with gas left in the tank and when Andy the RD asked if would go out for one more loop . .. I probably could have. He was winding me up. I then checked my time 6:41 Second in my age group[ol' fart category] and 15th overall . .. . a PB by 49 minutes.

.. . . I rate this as one of my favourite all time events. Really friendly, great course, wonderful people .. . an very challenging. I got talking to another racer afterwards who had done 14 bostons, 10 Ironmans . . .. and has his name in the draw for Kona!! . .. and even he admitted this was a really tough race[7:27] ...

Fighting a bit of a headcold thingy this week, not much in way of training but pushed myself out the door to the gym this morning. Woke myself us with 15 minutes of cycling intervals, hopped off, stretched and ran 3miles on a tm, hopped off, stretched again, did some drills, abs, played with weights, worked up an appetite for lunch .
