So this is the new thread . . .. replacing the one started back in December 2007 .... .. . some of us are still running ;) [some of us can't survive without it .. .]

At the moment my running consist of a couple of back to back long runs on the weekend, and anything I can find time for during the week . .. but as always life gets in the way! This week was one of those weeks . .. meetings in Toronto and then a bit of a car accident on wednesday . .. nobody hurt :)

Todays run was 20kms of snowy hills .. . Gomez spotted a female moose in the woods .. but decided not to give chase

Gro, you still have snow there, here in the burbs its quickly being reduced to slush.

Tonight's special - a slow, quiet 4k on quiet streets around my home, checking out the Christmas decorations, smell from fireplaces in the air. Lovely temps, not cold.

Put the running on the back burner since late September but the ole doll on the board hasn't been doing "le nothing". Two, three times a week on an elliptical, followed by stretching, drills, abs, arms. Tried spinnng a couple of times, not crazy about the "loudness" of the instructor and music blaring.

Also doing a lunch time stretch class on Stanley, downtown Montreal a couple of times a week and walking my neigbour's beagle, Charlie.

Testing the leg, not painful but creaky so not pushing it. Will start doing elliptical and bike intervals + strength/stability exercises.

For the new year, anyone seen these updates ? I think TB must have because he already has races in mind.

http://www.circuitendurance.ca Endurance has added a date in May - Chateauguay, which includes a half marathon.

The organizers at http://www.fournier-es.com/coupedix30/ have set their dates as well.

Good move, boss. And good to hear that no one got hurt. A lot of folks are getting 20 km/h fender-benders these days, but your full-on 60 km/h accident sounds scary as hell.

I've been down with a cold that just won't go away so my running has pretty much stopped for about a week. With the head still throbbing, I don't see myself running until the weekend at the earliest.

Thanks for heads-up for the Circuit Endurance changes, DF. I think the new half-marathon will be cheapest in the area: $20. I like this.

Ah... a new page for us. Good idea. A makeover of sorts.

I just returned from my trip to HK-China Monday night and I'm finally getting back into running. After much deliberation (it was a long flight home) I decided against running the 1/2 in April (sorry KZ) and focus my effort exclusively on 5 and 10km races. I'm working toward increasing the duration of my easy runs while maintaining the low heart rate focus. I hope that this will provide me with the endurance to sustain faster paces (3:40/km +) and work my way toward consistent 18-18:20 5km finish times. My hope is that this benefit would also translate into faster 10km times.

During the DDO 5km race, a tremendous effort was expended in order to run this pace at the cost of immense suffering. The feeling of placing my body into this zone is very unsettling because I knew it was only a matter of time before I would reach failure. My only hope would be that I would reach the finish before then.

DF: Keep working on the rehab and I know that it will pay off next year.

Take care,

welcome home ninja . . .

a rough week for me [yes, another] work, insurance, blah blah blah, .. . . I didn't manage to find time to run until yesterday morning, early in fact very early in the dark, moonlight, stars and -20c .... . 6 or so miles in an hour. . . seems slow, but felt just about right. Today was a much longer slower trudge in the other direction . . heading for the woods on snowmobile highway 43. I confess I found it really hard going to the point where I walked the steeper hills on the last quarter . .. 16 odd miles, program calls for 15 [I think] almost 3,5 hours.. yikes . ... Gomez is exhausted, and flaked out on the sofa dreaming of the deer he chased for a couple of hundred yards, fun to watch this big Bambi leaping in the air with a portuguese water dog in hot pursuit . . . one day I'll take my Flip camera.

for the records . ..

and for those of you that can't afford UnderArmour . . . You need Zyflex .. . . made in Bulgaria, with a little Eastern Block added to prevent chaffing ;)

Lovely evening for a run...left the house for about thirty minutes, turned on the tunes, tuned out Christmas.

Slick in some spots, hopping in and out of slush but not cold so not wearing heavy clothing, if winter were always like this, I wouldn't complain.

Last night we walked Charlie for an hour at a fast pace, funny beagle, hopping in and out of the snow..it was a nice break after a very full day. 2010 has been a very busy year.

TB - if my cross training doesn't pay off in the new year maybe I'll just pick up bingo.

TB, a good rule of thumb is to never make a decision in the middle of the night or on a 20+ hour flight. But if you still feel like focusing on the 5K and 10K, I understand. I still like the half-mary, but I will get to a couple 5Ks this spring, so I am sure I will see you.

For the autumn, I would really like to run a few of the shorter cross country races, maybe try to convince a few people into running one as a team. I think Boreale or Phoenix organize a friendly format team XC.

For now, it's a slow return to trudging through the snow, maybe with some post-communist super fabric cupping the body parts. If they make anything with an Ivan Drago print, I'm buying the whole product line.

DF, or anyone coming back from injury, here's an article about former WR holder, Khalid Khannouchi.

Trust everybody is having a good one . .. . my brood arrives tomorrow, so today was an indulgent lay-in. . . and a nice easy couple of hours "run to the couch" . .. exactly 10kms from my front door there is a camp set up by some hunters, I imagine .. and they left behind the carcass of an old sofa . .. so I now have a "10k to the couch" . .. Was it just me or did it seem cold & damp today . .. ?

I found it so during the day as I was in and out of the house but last night was perfect for a run..the only thing not perfect was the amount of bread, turkey, cherry pie, beaujolais I had at our family supper . " Rolling" down the quiet streets, had my tunes, not much traffic, what there was I was wary of, thought folks were driving fast, even a driver for the 15 on Riverside..which surprised me, the bus drivers are generally ok - he had me getting of the way pronto.

Went out as well Christmas eve, earlier, and was lucky to see an amazing sunset as I ran along Riverside and once again little traffic on this 5k I've mapped out. No running today but lots of walking planned. Checked the weather forecast, cold this morning, so anyone going out early, bundle up.

I generally hear of tree stands for hunting but I'm told they're not entirely comfortable - guess someone decided the couch would be.

DF: I too had too much turkey and all the trimmings and more... Ran this morning bright and early for the 2nd day straight now, hoping to keep the holiday calories from piling up... Got a bit of a workout at the Eaton Centre this afternoon, boxing day was in the food court more than it was in the stores... CRAZY!

Happy Holidays everyone!! Hope the running is going well for everyone!

. .. . I confess, I haven't run since Christmas morning! It seems we've all had a cold/flu to some degree . .. . and last weeks rain left a coating of ice on my dirt roads/trails . . . then there was the need to go skiing . . . and ferrying my boy about . .. etc etc .. . . there's all my excuses out of the way, so I screwed 1/4" hex sheet metal screws around the edge of the sole of a pair of old cascadias .. . so I'm now good to go!! jeez I'm jonesing for a run :)

I've been pretty good with my running, only missing a couple days despite hangovers and colds. Yesterday I ran an easy 16K on the treadmill and embarked on journey of self-discovery: it turns out that I am a big softie. I watched WALL-E for the whole run and was sincerely touched by the love story. There is an innocence in the robots, with their child-like articulations and fumbling ways.

KZ: I'm very much a softie as well. All of my runs are on the treadmill these days. I don't have the time to go to track and I my long runs are on the treadmill. There I am plodding on the treadmill watching the TSN highlight reel over and over again during the run. I've made the slight adjustment of setting my base run on a random elevation setting to narrow the gap between running on the treadmill and the real world.

Back to TSN and the soothing whirring of the treadmill.

. .. .. enough skiing, not great conditions anyways :( . .. so lets run on ice :) slowest 10kms in a long time, aided by 16 x 1/8" hex, sheet metal screws in my little ol' red Cascadias ... argh!

Wipped off a few layers of dust off my treadmill and ran 4.5 miles in the last two days, I have decided to try again with a slight modification of running really slow for a few weeks to see how that works, so far only a little pain that is tollerable.

Weight this week is just below 202 lbs, a lot less dramatic then the first weeks loss, the important thing is I'm down an inch and a half around the waist/belly button area.
