7 miles this morning. Wanted to go for 8, but just didn't have it.

On a different note, today is exactly one year since my horrible fall which landed me bleeding and broken 3 miles from home. So, at least my 7-miler was an improvement over last year's run.

Hope Jill is having fun at the Labor Pain ultra relay today!

Good luck to the 20k racers tomorrow!

It was 41 and sunny on the North Shore today. Absolutely gorgeous morning for a run. Got 11 miles done with 5 at MP. Was hoping for tempo miles but we did a 3 mile hike to top of Carlton Peak yesterday and my legs were too tired today to run fast.

That seemed like the never ending long run.

New Haven today, right? Go Go GO Racers!

I'm heading out for 10 miles. I ran 12 yesterday at about marathon pace, not really intentional. It felt like an okay pace, not too uncomfortable, so I stuck with it. But I took a route that had a couple of stoplights that I had to stop and wait for and I ran in to the gym at the 7 mile mark to badge in for an incentive credit. (I am totally going to hit the mark for the extra deduction in monthly gym dues this quarter. SWEET!) So I had some stops and starts. Anyway, I'm going to shoot for a slower easier pace today. But I better get going if I'm going to beat the thunderstorms that are heading this way. SUPAH glad I got the grass cut yesterday!

Happy Labor Day!

18.7 miles done. Supposed to be 20 but the rain that hit me about the 9 mile mark started to have some lightning in it. 20 is a nice, but it ain't worth dying for...Today I was about 30 seconds per mile faster than my 20 miler last week. Shows you what a difference temps in the low 60s makes.

Luck to the New Haven folks!

Hi guys. I'm back to my parents' house after the New Haven 20k. It was great to see Maria for a little bit. We only ran together for about 2 miles because we lost each other at the first aid station. Maria didn't have the greatest run, and I'll let her describe that when she can. But the most important thing is that she's fine and she'll live to run anothe day.

My run was okay. Last year, I ran this race in 1:36:46. According to my Garmin, I made it today in 1:36:59. So I missed a PR by a little bit. I was really hoping to get a new PR by a couple minutes. So that's a little disappointing. But meh. I really just wasn't feeling it today. Multiple times I tried to drop the hammer and pick up the pace, but I just couldn't do it. At least not until the final stretch run. The good news is that I kept a fairly consistent pace throughout the whole race. My splits were: 8;11, 7:58, 7:56, 7:45, 7:54, 7:48, 7:49, 7:52, 7:53, 7:57, 7:30, 7:21, (6:42). Not too bad, but just not quite what I wanted. Meh, I'll take it.

As you guys know, I grew up in this town. My high school is located in New Haven, and 2010 is the school's 350th anniversary. (It's the second-oldest high school in the U.S., after Boston Latin, which is located across the street from Fenway Park in Boston). The title sponsor of the New Haven race is a law firm, whose founder is a graduate of my high school. So they made a big deal about this anniversary. I got a free tech shirt from the booth my school had set up, which is nice. About 200 current students and alums ran either the 20k or the 5k, which seems like a good number for a school that's only got about 100 kids per class. We took a big group picture with everybody. Unfortunately, I didn't see a single person that I recognized. I guess the Class of '89 is just too fat and lazy to run a race.

Nice run KP and nice bike workout Tonya.

Bob - congrats on a strong race! I know you wanted a PR, but that looks like a mighty fine race to me!

(((((((Maria))))))))

I usually take Mondays off of running, but given the nice temps, it was hard to justify slacking. I was moving slow thanks to too much wine with good friends last night, but I was able to put 8 miles in the books. That rounds off to just over 62 miles in the last calendar week, which is huge compared to my training weeks during the last several months.

This thread keeps eating my posts...this is a test.

ok, now I'll try to edit. C25K W5D1 for me today, plus some stretching and core work.

Great race Bob. ((Maria)) and great workouts RIL, KP, Tonya and people on Page 1. I'm chicken to flip back.

More later!

Nice workouts today! And racing!

I ran my 10 but I wasn't slower. It was about the same as yesterday. QUESTION: How bad is it to run long and middle-long runs too fast? According to McMillan my LR pace should be 10:26-11:26 and Hal Higdon emphasizes how important it is to run your long runs slow. I don't try to run my 20 milers at a 10:00 pace but the 12 miler yesterday and the 10 miler today were both at about 10:00 which is actually about what my marathon pace would be for a goal time of 4:20. I don't feel like I'm working too hard, but it's not super easy either. It's comfortably okay. I hope it feels that way on race day.

Next weekend is my last 20 miler! Seems like it went so fast. 27 days until race day!

Isn't the slower pace supposed to help build your endurance?

That said, my long runs are always around 10s too Goon, although I guess my race pace is more in the 8:50-8:55 range.

Goon - I often run easy runs slow (which for me lately is 9:20s - 9:40s - a little slower than I'd like), but I always try to pick it up some for long runs and be around the 8:40-9:10 range. That said, my goal marathon race pace is around 7:55ish. In short, I like long runs close to a minute per mile slower than race pace. But that is also because there is NO WAY I could run my long runs (every week) at marathon pace without having serious training setbacks. So generally, I run most runs slow, long runs at a steady pace, and then tempos/speed work.

Interesting topic. How 'bout everyone else?

Good evening all and Happy Labor Day! I hope everyone had a great weekend and got to spend lots of time with their running, family and friends ;) J and I had a great time in Vermont hiking and boating and eating and drinking and hiking a bit more. New Haven felt like the last in a series of "down" moments in this training cycle and I'm just not sure I'm cool with continuing to push at it. We'll see.

Great job to everyone on their LRs and to boB's 20K, Litch's 5K and Tonya's open water swim! Any word from Alexis on her TRI?

Hey ya kids,

Nice weekend of workouts and races! :)

I got in an hour run this afternoon. 1 Wait Wait and 1/2 of a Car Talk. Headed to the neighbor's for a cookout now...
