As an American and a fan of running, the best thing you can ask of an athlete representing his/her country is to give their best effort and to hopefully perform to the best of their abilities. Mike clearly ran a smart, controlled race and finished like an absolute champion. Jurek may have run farther, but from what I can see, the team medal could not have happened without Mike's strong ass-kicking finish. I wish I could have seen him blowing past people the last few hours - what a sight that would have been! HUGE congrats to Flounder for this performance!

Chris, excellent post. Jurek ran 166 miles, and he had to post that big number for the team to succeed. Flounder ran 154. If you got an honest answer from the "insiders" they would never have said that "Plan A" was for Flounder to drop the fastest (or nearly) 5k for the entire competition on the Italians starting at 3:38 am this morning to keep the US from slipping off of the podium.

I'm a semi-fan of ultrarunning so I know some of the big names, and clearly everyone knows Jurek, so I know of Serge Arbona...I'm not sure what happened to him, dropping from a few km behind Jurek to fading back (no disrespect to him, Lord knows I couldn't do that!). So for Mike to steadily come from 81st to 47th to top 30 to top 20 all the way to 12th...what an amazing performance! He must have been cruising by people late - that's insane! THAT is the kind of performance that people remember - sure, the winner ran a lot further and Jurek broke the AR, but to have a guy kicking that much ass that late in that long of a race...and setting a new PR to boot - wow! Awe-inspiring and very motivating!

I'm now EXTREMELY motivated for my first 100 miler this summer. I had a really rough long training run last Friday in Arizona where I bonked big time (nearly passed out in the desert and had to walk 3 miles back to my car and puked right before I finished), but Mike's performance has gotten my head back in the game.

I can't wait to read his race report!

Well said Chris! Congrats to Flounder and the entire men's & women's teams for giving it their all.

Chris,

I agree with you and I wish you the best in your 100 miler this summer.

I did my first 50 miler in early April. I hit a rough spot between miles 35 and 45, then my last 5 miles were very likely my best (not fastest) running for the whole day, as I ran that 10 minute stretch 10 minutes faster than the previous lap.

The outcome: Placed 15th overall (after not passing anyone over that last 5 miles) 7th in my age group, got handed a "finisher's coffee mug' (my wife loves the mug, I've never gotten to use it yet) and when I got home I folded some laundry and helped our little kids with their baths. If I had sucked over that last 5 miles, only one person would have cared and he would have gotten over it within about 30 minutes.

It is one thing to have a "nice finish" in a meaningless local race and another thing to step on the collective throats of your competition at money time when you are in an international competition representing your peeps at kickrunners...er...your country.

Perfect example of willing yourself to the finish! Go Mike.

Even more impressive is that he wasn't willing himself to the finish - in a 24 hour race, he was willing himself to run faster and further, which can only give you more pain. I have to imagine that's tougher than telling yourself "OK, just get to point B and when you get there, you're done." Nope - in that race you have to say "I have x amount of time left, I can either shut it down and cruise in and hope the time flies by, or I can keep pushing and pushing - it's going to hurt either way!"

Ok! So, you are always right
By the way, good luck at BR. Don't make the mistake of burning out with the lead pack my friend.

From the official team site:

HALFWAY REPORT: U.S. & Japanese men are in a virtual dead-heat for the team lead. French women are pulling away from the Americans, who still have a big lead over the Italian women. Jill Perry left the course for a brief nap & massage, but then charged back out, looking refreshed. This allowed the French women to extend their lead quickly. Team Manager Roy Pirrung reports that Perry's break was precautionary, rather than indicative of any serious problem. But just in case, Anna Piskorska is running a bood backup, less than 1km behind the former race leader. Serge Arbona suffered a brief bout of cramping between the shoulder blades. The crew put him in the hands of the "invaluable, incredible" (Pirrung's words) Dr. Andy Lovy, who effected a quick muscular repair and increased Serge's electrolytes. Pirrung's overall assessment of the team is that our top 3 men (Jurek, Arbona, McCarthy) and top 2 women (Bon, Donaldson) are in great position and great shape. Michael Henze is running as 4th American now, but is probably too far off the pace to keep the team in the medals should one of the top 3 falter. Amy Palmiero-Winters seems to have her prosthesis issues under control but is suffering from stomach woes. Dr. Andy is nursing her with Ginger Ale as she focuses on keeping pace with Deb Horn.

In the reporter's defense, he was a ways back after 12 hours and he was an "unknown".

Two sort of interesting points ...

The folks on the ultralist were much more supportive (knowledgeable?) of Henze as the final hours passed. Several personal exchanges took place as we started tracking the decreasing times of his laps in those final two or three hours.

Palmiero-Winters did a very good job of damage assessment and adjusting to turn in the miles she did.
I'm dumb, yes, but not epically dumb! Lloyd told the same exact thing to my buddy Kyle, that he's concerned I'll just roll along with some of the top runners and dig myself a big hole.

Well, I have to say it is the speed thing that you possess. Slow down and pace yourself. Run your race and no elses. Somehow I keep telling myself that at each attempt and get caught up in the competitive side of it all. You on the other hand are a better pacer .

To stick with the story: Mike also got a little love here on the ultrarunning site
