When I did the math a few minutes ago, the US and Japan were virtually on total distance between the top 3 runners.

Japan: 155.6+145.6+139.4=440.6
US: 150.6+146.9+143.1=440.6

Last year they scored based on distance rather than cross country style.

I haven't seen anything saying they have switched to a XC-style of scoring--as far as I know (never anything reliable) they still use cumulative distance for the first three team members.

I think Mr. Henze is fixing to have an interesting four hours while the U.S. and
Japanese camps will glance at splits, both sides trying to find a few fleeting
seconds with each passing lap.

Hee hee hee...it's only 11:02 p.m. out here on the coast--the one o'clock finish means I get some sleep. What a great race they are having. Two hours and closing, time to kick, and all that. Great effort and patience--I'll go with Henze as story of the day even if Jurek gets the record.

Henze is trying real hard to move the US to second--his eyes must be boring holes in the back of the next runner up.

... Michael Henze is running as 4th American now, but is probably too far off the pace to keep the team in the medals should one of the top 3 falter. Amy Palmiero-Winters seems to have her prosthesis issues under control but is suffering from stomach woes. Dr. Andy is nursing her with Ginger Ale as she focuses on keeping pace with Deb Horn.

In the reporter's defense, he was a ways back after 12 hours and he was an "unknown".

Two sort of interesting points ...

The folks on the ultralist were much more supportive (knowledgeable?) of Henze as the final hours passed. Several personal exchanges took place as we started tracking the decreasing times of his laps in those final two or three hours.

Palmiero-Winters did a very good job of damage assessment and adjusting to turn in the miles she did.
