I think that I learned it was "a lot" rather than "alot" when I was in college and was informed by spell check.

BTW, I hate unnecessary/misused apostrophe's (just kidding!)...apostrophes as well. And maybe this is a personal thing, but I hate when people use adjectives when they really need to use adverbs (that Apple ad encouraging me to "Think Different" annoyed me to no end.)
