Howdy Folks,

After two successfull mini-meetups this past weekend, MN and NYC, the mini-meetup concept seems to be the theme of the day. There have been perhaps a half dozen people interested in details regarding the events surrounding the Mercedes weekend, so I'm starting this thread so we can do some planning.

Here's the outline of the weekend's events:

Friday Feb 8th:
Health & Fitness Expo open 1 - 7 PM

Saturday Feb 9th:
BE5K - 5K race 8:00am start

BE5K - post race party (Boutwell Auditorium) starts @ 8:15am [join post race] Awards presentation @ 10:00am

Mercedes Kids Marathon - 10:00am - 11:15
- this event is where registered kids run the last mile of their marathon on the Mercedes course. Each child comes to the race with a log book for 25 miles completed prior to the race. (My daughter will be in this race, and I will run with her)

8:00am - 6:00pm Health & Fitness Expo open

Sunday Feb 10th:

Mercedes Marathon start - 7:03am

Alabama Power Mercedes Half Marathon start - 7:03am

Mercedes Marathon Relay start - 7:03am
- this is a 5 person relay, so shorter distances than a 4 person event. Relay distances per team member in order are: 10K - 5K - 10K - 5K - 12K

9:00am - 2:00pm Jim n' Nick's post race party and Awards ceremony. This is a good one, free beer and bar b q! Hard to beat.

BE5K Race details:
$25 registration fee by Feb 4th. Entries postmarked by Jan 31, 2008.
$35 at the Expo or day of race
- I've run this 5K course before, it's used for the Race For The Cure. It's flat.

Well, I just registered!

I put a hold on airline tickets with my Freq Flier miles. I would be flying into B'ham at 4:35pm on Friday and leaving at 8:10am on Monday. Guys, please let me know if any of you guys plan on being around on Sunday night. I don't want to stay in town there by myself if y'all are all going home. If you are all leaving, I'll try to change the flights so that I can get out of there Sunday night. Let me know...

Gee, I wasn't even drunk. But I think I'll pop open a Sam Winter Lager now...

Yeah, that's next on my list. I want to use Freq Flier miles for this ticket also, and I've searched but there's nothing available into Eugene -- even this far out. I guess that's not too surprising since it's a small airport. (It is, isn't it?). I may have to fly into Portland and rent a car. That's kind of a pain in the ass, but I think I can live with it if it helps me get a free plane ticket.

I'll get to it soon...

Yeah Bob - I'm trying to decide on the same thing.

Flying for free with miles into Portland and renting a car or flying into Eugene but paying.

Maybe if we both decide to fly into Portland we could share a car - providing we could get flights arriving and departing around the same times.

The lowest ticket I've found so far into Eugene was $350.

The thing is flying into Portland and then renting a car kind of defeats the purpose of a free ticket doesn't it? I mean a rental car for three days could be costly too right?

The one plus to flying into Portland, for me out of Philly is it's a direct flight. To Eugene I'm changing planes.

I don't think I'll spend a second night, Timr's kids will be terrified of the "snory monster" enough after 1 night on his couch.

Plus I have some church business I'll probably need to get to (business meeting sched'd).

But it appears I can be talked into nearly anything. So who knows? lol

#39 ·
I'll be happy to be your roommate. Hopefully my roommates in Philly weren't too upset by staying with me...

Once again, I've put flights on hold. I'd be getting into Birmingham at 4:35pm on Friday Feb 8 and leaving at 8:10am on Monday Feb 11. Do those times seem reasonable? I could go ahead and confirm those tickets at any time...

I am lucky to only have a 2.5 hour drive. IF all goes well I will be there early afternoon on Friday and can leave anytime Monday morning when the crew departs. My wallet will be most happy to share a room. hah

Tiff said she could stay through Monday for extra weekend mayhem as well! Our 4 day weekend army grows!!! That's Tim, Bob, Tiff and me. Of course we need to get even more awesome 30s to "come on down and see us" as we say in the South.

I have two friends here in town that both own t-shirt shops. I can possibly work with them to get the t-shirts made if you want. Great idea Flem! Perhaps a small kickrunner logo on the left front pocket area. Then on the back have a bigger kickrunner logo with your saying above and below the logo? Ideas? White writing?

As mentioned before we also need all Birmingham people to bring the baseball cap and or tshirt of their SEC school. I want to take our version of the old "family tradition" picture. Remember the old cartoon painting of the SEC mascots posing together? It's great. If I can ever find one of those prints I will buy it. It's from the 70s or early 80s.

I know Ms Beth isn't a huge Georgia Bulldogs football fan but if you (Beth) can bring a Tshirt with Georgia on it that would do just fine for our group picture.

Okay, I've booked my flights. I'll arrive in B'ham on Friday Feb 8 at 4:35pm and leave Monday Feb 11 at 8:10am. And I'm registered for the marathon. I guess I'll need to register for the 5k, if I want to be like Tim and run both. But I assume that can happen at any time.

Maples, I'd be happy to share a room with you, and I trust your judgement when it comes to picking a hotel. I think it'd make sense if we all try to stay in the same place, and that we book soon. If there's one thing I've learned from my various trips around the country for marathons, it's that hotel rooms tend to book up early...

Bob I have looked a week or so ago and the 5k registration wasn't open. Thanks for the reminder. I'll check again tonight. Here is information on Tim's suggestion on the third option:
------
3400 Colonnade Prkwy at US 280
Birmingham, Alabama, USA, 35243
1-205-967-0002
7.14 miles from city center
- this one is probably the best choice for a number of reasons. First, it's located in a nice part of town and yet is still only 10 mins for the race site. 2nd, it's right in the middle of all the shopping and restaraunts, and 3rd: it's in the parking lot of my office building!!
-------

http://www.hamptoninn.com/en/hp/hote...tyhocn=BHMCOHX

link to website. The website shows this rate:

https://secure.hilton.com/en/hp/res/...questid=179398

Split that in two I suppose folks. Maybe there is a cheaper rate. I tried my best. That is for arriving Friday and leaving on Monday morning. 3 full nights. I will check online for cheaper rates at other hotels in the area. I'll ask Tim for other suggestions.

Just checked and still no info on 5k registration. Not open yet.

Maybe this will make it easier:

Expedia results for Bham on that weekend:

http://www.expedia.com/Hotel-Search?...-7401218b4e64&

Priceline.com results:

http://travela.priceline.com/hotel/s...11961&plf=PCLH

Travelocity.com results:

http://travel.travelocity.com/hotel/...OTEL_FRONTDOOR

Hoteldiscounts.com does not give a nice clean link. But you can try it yourself:

www.hoteldiscounts.com

hope this helps.

BTW I am so flexible and easy to please. As long as it's in a safe neighborhood, clean, with a lock on the door and at reasonable rate I'm good. Brand names of hotels are irrelevant to me.

Right next to the LSU fan. *sweet smile* Of course I've got the braggin' rights this year! Imagine how much Bamas gonna love me sportin' my LSU gear in their state.

And I'm in to stay through at least Monday. I just requested the vacation time and if I don't get it no big deal because I have Mardi Gras weekend the week before to bargin with people. That's THE holiday in Louisiana so it's a good get me off the days I want tool for swaps.
