First negative comment.

The auto split alert is a little weak. On the 305 it's super loud and lasts more than a second. On the 405 it's only a little peep that doesn't last very long. I think it would be pretty easy to miss it if you were running in a loud environment. I did have headphones on and could hear it but only because I knew it was coming and I won't say I heard it well. More to come on this later - I only ran 3+ miles and had the auto lap set to every mile - so I only heard it three times.

Larry, does it do waypoints and "go to this location" with the little compass and range/bearing info like the 305 does?

Update - I'm convinced it's finding the GPS signal faster.

I took it to two brand new locations this past week. As soon as I entered training mode the signal was there. On the 305 when I power I on I always get the "locating satellites" bar for what seems like a few minutes. Haven't seen that yet on the 405 (except when I turned on GPS inside.)

Sweet - with my 305, I get the locating satelites for a few minutes too (unless it's cloudy, or I'm in a new location, and then it's more like an eternity, and not a few minutes).

I'm glad to hear that the 405 is better!

Same here. Well, around a minute on good days, but yeah, often more.

So now I am seriously tempted. I guess I'm going to have to go through the 405 manual carefully and see what I'd be giving up. Looks like battery life is one thing, 8 vs. 10 hours.

I'm just guessing, but my guess is the discrepancy between the 201 ~13 hours and 305 ~11 hours could be the HRM taking a little drain on the battery. The discrepancy between the 405 and the 305 could be explained as LL says, by size. Also the 405 has some other features which could cause battery drain such as 'wireless synch' which I'm assuming is a bluetooth derivative.

To me, 8 hours isn't an issue. If I do a 3 hour run on Saturday, a 1 hour run on Sunday, a 45 minute run on Monday, and a 1.5 hour run on Tuesday, I've still got enough juice for an hour or more on Wednesday before I recharge it. Seems like plenty of life for me.

There's only one single day event I've ever done which has taken me longer than 8 hours, and it was gnarly enough terrain, that I wouldn't take anything other than a $30 Timex for fear of losing it
