What do you do?

I am convinced at some point I'm going to find someone who will work at the company DH works at and we'll get the nice referral fee.

Atlanta rocks... and TJOCF-- that puts you away from your family so you don't have to deal with them all the time, but not so far that it's hard to visit for holidays and stuff

CT - highest per capita income in the country - if you're into that kind of thing.

Kind of expensive to live here though.

Pros:

Almost no:

Tornadoes
Earthquakes
Hurricanes
Mud Slides

6 seasons!

Spring
Summer
Autumn
Stick
Winter
Mud

Almost no traffic

Close to Montreal & Boston

Cons:

High taxes

I am formulating my own exit strategy, so I can not in good conscience recommend NE NC. (And even if I wasn't looking for a way out, I still couldn't in good conscience recommend it. )

Good luck with your next steps.

I don't know yet.

But having at least one friend nearby is one of my "must-have"'s! I've moved to places knowing no one in the past and it's a great growth experience, but lonesome until you make connections.

I'm slowly (painfully slowly) planning my exit from NJ and definately would not recommend this area to anyone. My top two choices right now are:
Charlottesville, VA
Charlotte, NC
Based on my research, these two places have a good quality of life and also a booming economy. Housing in VA was a little higher (nothing compared to NJ) then I had hoped. Metro NY=not a great place to raise kiddies, IMHO. Good luck-interesting responses. BTW-Atlanta area would have made my top choice list but my NJ born DH would be in culture shock

Small town atmosphere, but driving distance to anything you might need. One of the safest small cities to live in, very family friendly, absolutely gorgeous, outdoor paradise (though it helps if you like winter sports too), very active running/tri communities, pretty affordable housing and a great school district, very little traffic, great food.

How's about where I live???

Advantages:
Four seasons
cheap housing
cheap cost of living
did I mention cheap housing?
low taxes
small town feel in a mid-size metropolitan area
90 minute drive to Nettie, Oache, and other Chi-town peeps
90 minute drive to Dylan McKay
ME!
Commutes are pretty short
CAD work abundant

Disadvantages:
Lake Effect Snow
Potholes

Charlottesville is really nice and has many attractive benefits.

Charlotte is growing extremely fast ... if you or your SO is in banking might be good. My preference in NC is Raleigh/Triangle area but I think it depends on your industry.

You may have some culture shock in Charlotte, although there are plenty of transplants to soften it a bit.

So what are you doing to plan your strategy? Good luck to you too.
