Hi there,

Welcome to Kickrunners.com and here is the Starting Gate - Your first port of call as you start to embrace and enjoy running and the community here.

On this site we have a Starting Plan to get you from Start to Finish, building you from Starting off, to completing a 5K in just two months - It's very similar to the C25K Plan, written back in the nineties, which you may have heard off elsewhere, just updated for today following feedback over the years from successful graduates of the programme.

We also have programmes to take you beyond the 5K goal, and will soon have more programmes available here for you to enjoy. I'm available to help anyone and everyone, either in the Forum, or if you prefer to PM me I will get back to you as soon as I can.

This Thread should be a good place for you to Introduce yourself to the Kick! Running Community, and to get you started, I'll let you know something about me. I'm 49, live in Dublin, Ireland, and have been running since school days. I have 22 marathons to my name, and lots of other races at all sorts of distances. I have been coaching and putting something back into the running world since the early 90's, and have devised the Up to 5K plans here at Kickrunners.

I am a regular visitor Stateside, having run many races in the US and Canada, and made many friends through running, maybe you will meet me at the next Big Kickrunners meet (Philadelphia in Nov 07 is looking like a wild party!). So, that's a little about me, lets hear from you - And Welcome to the Home of Community Running.

Hi all,
I'm new to running. Started about a month ago and am really bad at it. Using a heart monitor to time my run/walk intervals. Given my current progress, I probably should be using a pacemaker instead.

Hello,
I'm from Charleston WV USA. I recently restarted running and am loving it. I'm running about 20 MPW. I recently lost just over 30 lbs. and I'm hoping the loss of the next 30 will help me run a sub 2:30:00 1/2 mary. I hope to do that in late April. Everyone seems very very nice here and I look forward to getting to know everyone.

If you are training for 1/2, there is a group in the training plan forum that are following the 1/2 training program here. You might check it out and see if you want to join them for some fun and support!

Hi all! New to KR but looking to stay here. I've been running only since June (used C25K; LOVED it!!) but am "doing" (that means walking and running s...l...o...w...l...y) a marathon in January. That was DH's gift (?) to me. Not looking for anything but to finish alive. After that, I am looking to train in serious mode for a 15K in May. I am slow but faster than I was sitting on the couch. I am here for advice and camraderie and have a feeling I'll get it here!

I'm hoping to start running again soon. I just got back from my first physical therapy appointment and I'm feeling optimistic! (And my PT is a runner, which is very encouraging.)

About three years ago I started running and over the course of the summer I worked up to three miles, three times a week. I loved it! I remember that time as one of my happiest. When my knees started to ache, I iced and took NSAIDS and kept on going. Eventually the pain was so bad that I was hobbling around even on non-running days and meeting a flight of stairs would cause me to whimper in frustration.

I did go to a specialist at the time, and was given bad information. I quit running and resigned myself to becoming a fast walker... until that hurt, too.

The final straw was a few months ago, when I started helping my son with his paper route. Just a slow, steady walk every morning, 45-60 minutes. When that aggravated my knees, I knew that I needed help. I'm only 41 years old; I should be able to walk a paper route!

Anyway, I have exercises to do and I can do the route without pain as long as I'm wearing my elastic knee braces, which the PT approved. I don't know how long it will take, but I will run again!

Ever since I quit running, I've lived vicariously through various running forums but I hope to one day be running and posting about it here! This seems like a great group of people.

Welcome Diana.

I have a bad knee too, but since getting told by the knee doc that it will never heal I've managed to run 43 marathons. Thought I'd toss that in to give you some hope.

If you need encouragement about how to run, feel free to PM me.

Christie,

I'm so glad to find your blog; I think it's very inspiring.

I've been trying to eat a primarily vegan diet for years, but I fail more often than I succeed. I do know that following the McDougall plan makes me the healthiest and happiest but it's a struggle with kids who literally shed tears upon hearing his name.

I'll keep reading your blog and maybe in a few months' time I'll be back to both running and McDougalling.

Thanks for posting your link.

Here's his website.

He advocates a vegan diet that is also free of added fats (although whole-food fats such as avocados and nuts are fine for those in good health who do not have to lose weight). I followed it to the letter for about three months several years ago, lost twenty pounds easily and felt wonderful, had lots of energy. I haven't been very successful with sticking to it, though.

The recipes he has in his books aren't always palatable for me and mine, so I collect vegan cookbooks/recipes in the hopes that one day I'll dive back into it.

To me, Dr. McDougall just makes sense. When I read his books and newsletters he seems like the only sane person in a sea of craziness. He's the only "diet expert" to have that effect on me. I just wish I found it easier to do.

Hi Christie and Diana

Christie's blog let me to other vegan blogs, and I spent an afternoon blog-reading like crazy so thanks!

I had read a McDougall book a few years ago and it made lots of sense to me, but I wasn't ready at the time. I did the Fuhrman Eat to Live plan this summer, and it was great...during the summer. The salad-centric eating isn't so appealing now that it's cold, and I really drifted in my eating habits.

I think I'm ready to dive into the McDougall plan now.

Thanks, both of you, for inspiring me!

Right now, I'm a "re-newbie" with my running, coming back from a foot injury.

Altoids, I just added your blog to my feed reader, too. If I keep this up, I'll be too busy reading about running to run.

And I'd love to hear about it if you do indeed "McDougall." I have the Fuhrman book but his recipes look even less edible than some of McD's. I've had the best luck finding lowfat vegan recipes online or in "sexier" vegan cookbooks...
