What Suesquatch said (although I'm not going back to find what page it was originally posted on).

This board and Boomers & Beyond over there have a few things in common. There is no room for dissent. The popular players are the ones who have the most time to post. Everybody else is pretty much ignored by most of the regulars. And most of the people who post at both places may have a need for acceptance, validation and fullfillment that they may not be getting in their real lives. So the support group mentality continues; there can be no criticism even if it is meant to be constructive. Sarcasm in the name of humor is not even the least bit recognized or understood. You have created a fantasy cyber world where you can feel safe, happy and giddy. I feel so uneasy and slightly nauseated every time I come here looking for something real. And I frankly just don't want to devote the time to try to change things.

The real world is dirty and imperfect. But it is real. Why do you need to run away from it? Creating a little utopia in a corner of the internet is just, well... weird.

Oh well, I'm done. Proceed.

I will say this.

I learned that people will say start threads about anything you want to. No one is stopping you. I started this thread and the response I got from a hostile and vocal (minority?) is if you don't like it leave.

So I have learned my lesson. I was going to stay and only post things like "congrats" and "nice tie" and other pleasantries. I usually hand out these compliments any way. But staying in a place where I face hostility for expressing my thoughts, feelings or opinions makes no sense to me. So I will move on.

I will still participate in the VRAA and check in with the other ultra people. But I will let those of you who were made to feel uncomfortable by my presence have your peace.

Those of you who wish feel free to send me an email or a PM if you would like to say hello.

I realize that some of you will think I am being childish for leaving. But the truth of the matter is I do not have drama in my real life. I don't need to be getting riled up or hurt by people I don't even know.

Best of luck to each of you in your pursuits.

What confuses me from those who feel posters aren't allowed to post what they want - or they're ignored, or not acknowledged, or whatever way it was said by more than one poster is this:

Where on the 'net is there ANYPLACE where you can get 100% acceptance, responsiveness, dialog, etc..??

There will always be something that doesn't float because the topic doesn't interest the majority of the posters on line at that time. It's that way everywhere including the clubhouse at coolrunning. Certain topics simply don't fly there and go away or morphed into something that DOES meet the masses appeal.

The PRT is what it is.. a good place for some; an indifferent place to others; and just 'disgusts' yet others... that's pretty much life in a nutshell, ain't it?

It isn't because there are thought police or there's a secret code of silence on certain topics or anything even close... And yeah, there is a loop.. I'm not part of it - but anywhere you have a lot of people hanging out, there will be groups that are tighter than others.. it's the nature of humans (and those here who aren't! :SMILE

And though I'd like to think we can build a site that meets everyones needs or one where everyone feels welcome and a part of it - that just isn't a reality. I will say, that the moderators of the site as well as myself are very receptive to suggestions and ideas and aren't afraid to try different things to create a site that most people will find something that they enjoy.

enjoy what we have - or don't
if you don't and have a suggestion, let us know.. nothing is out of the realm of possibility as this forum package gives us a great deal of flexibility
if you don't care one way or the other - that's ok too!

either way... it is what it is... and odds are the sun'll come up tomorrow if we're here or not.

rich
really interesting thoughts and input on this thread.....

Tim, that of course, is your choice.

I think the PRT would be a lesser place by your absence (other than congratulatory threads)

But honestly....If your start a thread stating that you feel diversity of thought and opinion is frowned upon in the PRT, you weren't expecting anyone at all to object or feel defensive?

I think threads about controversial topics have a place here in the PRT and we should have more of them.

And, hopefully the conversation will be civil when we do.

But, I think it would also be fair to expect that maybe a few responses might not be as civil as we would like.
Since the step has already been taken to move games and longer-running threads into a subforum, what about creating a subforum for those more serious discussions. I know RiffRaff had something similar, and it seemed to work well.

Just an idea. It seems that might strike the balance between the 'take it or leave it's' and those who wish for more serious discussions...

Good idea. I've seen a forum like this on one of the religious boards I visit. The subforum is called the Lion's Den!

On the other hand, plopping this stuff into another forum won't prevent people from losing their temper or getting angry at the original poster.

I disagree with the whole concept of sub-forums on a running message board. The PRT already fits the definition of a sub-forum. Why split the atom further?

Of course the PRT will take on the tone the majority of the participants want it to take. I feel there is ample room for diversity here. IF the tone is not sufficiently edgy, and after you have tossed out a few threads along those lines, you still find it lacking, then “see ya later, bye”. I do not think the whole board need to bend to a handful of posters desires.

That post by Wu was ridiculous. Crap, get over yourself dude. I and everyone here I am sure, have ample drama and interesting discussions and experiences in IRL. You want hot debate, go join a debating forum, perhaps it will come equipped with a sub-forum for runners.

I enjoy the feel here and will keep coming here. I’ll save my edgy argumentation for real life over a couple of beers with friends. Occasionally, I may even do so here.

so are you saying most discussions here are really about running?!

Wow, I can't understand kicking Wu's opinion so harshly, I think you back up his comment 100%. Who cares, he posts like........never. Bye Wu. good to see you for a little anyway.

?

no, there are no discussions about running in the PRT, but the PRT is just one forum on a runners message board.

What I took offense at was "
You have created a fantasy cyber world where you can feel safe, happy and giddy. I feel so uneasy and slightly nauseated every time I come here looking for something real. And I frankly just don't want to devote the time to try to change things.

"

I disagree with this description of the PRT and take offense at what he implies about the people here.

obviously if someone feels that way there is little here to engage them here

so - addios, I am not going to try to "mend the error of my ways" so it fits someone elses idea of what the PRT should be.

What, he shows up, leaves a post like that, and I'm not suppose to call him on it?

No, you're supposed to say "some people."

Haven't you been reading this thread??

I know, I know, I'll be in the corner.

I'm surprised that no one has taken offense to what I read as implied criticism here. And no, I'm personally not taking offense in the slightest. The complaint is that the people here don't like the topics that they should.

All the stuff about certain topics being discouraged all boils down to the complaint that threads on those topics are sinkers. They aren't discussed because no one cares. This has and will be getting MUCH worse. There is way too much traffic here for most people to participate in everything. More and more if the thread isn't really exactly what we're interested in, we'll move on immediately without even reading all of the initial entry.

So your passion is Football, and you go to a party really wanting to talk to everyone about the Bengals. But no one there cares - they have other interests. They may listen politely but you will find no passionate discussions.

You can rail about the "self-censorship" at the party all you want. You can call everyone meanyheads and threaten to leave. It doesn't change anything. No one is going to start talking about the Bengals.
