Ailarie, you can always ask for references from contractors.

Roofing has lots of variables, from the qty discount they get on materials depending on their volume of work, to how they do their drip edging, vents, etc. Oh, and a biggie is whether they use legal labor or not.

Hello 30s!

Well, thank you for the good meeting vibes, but long long story short, the meeting sucked monkey balls. Honestly the worst interview I have ever been in both as an interviewer and an interviewee. I was left with the crystal clear impression that I have nothing to offer them. And this was after being HEAVILY recruited to apply. I think if I had just applied cold and had this interview experience, I wouldn't feel so insulted/disappointed/confused. I had met with the Director back in February and it was a completely different vibe, good rapport, real interest and encouragement that I was JUST what they needed. Yesterday couldn't have been more opposite. You know how you sit and wonder if the interview could really be going as badly as you think? Well for me, it was and then some.

I think what bothers me even more was that I was willing to completely disrupt my entire family to make this job work. And for what? To be treated like that? No thank you. So now I'm debating whether to call and withdraw my name or just let things roll.

Sorry for the saga.

Love the house pics, Prae!

I too was sad to read about the latest earthquake...how much more can Japan take?

Mindi, I love to see how much fun you have with GOTR!

Happy Birthday Aiden!

Awww Shannon, that sucks. Sorry!

Prae - I saw all the pics on FB, looks great!! I'm a big fan of color on the walls and you made some great choices. That shot of the multiple laptops on the table looks quite familiar, resembling my own home

Ah man, Colleen, I'm sorry.

I am having yet another anxiety attack today. Gah. I've been able to keep them under control but this is the 3rd or 4th in the last week or so, or at least I've been verging on one that many times. Sigh.

i'm sorry to hear that, shannon. i was (and will continue) pulling for ya!

off to read news re: japan.

NCRG - Ahh dangit. I'm sorry the meeting didn't go anywhere near what you had hoped for.

Beakerbabe - Baby A is THREE? that's just not right. Really. There's a mathematical error there somewhere, methinks!

Prae - Well done on the walls! Your neighbor was off their rocker telling you how bad that was going to look. I think it's very tastefully painted and decorated!

Missybabe - Yah for sleeping AK's! I too, would like to sleep for 11 hours!

Maureen - /hughugs chica.

Japan - Egads.. those poor folks!

Roofing stuff - I'm still in a bit of a whirlwind, but I may have found a direction at least. A neighbor used to (until she had her baby a year ago) work for a home buidling company. She put me in touch with a contractor that she said she'd recommend for just about anything.. they were that good, and that reliable. No idea how they're going to rank in the overall cost of things, but I trust my neighbor, and if she says these guys are that good, I believe they're that good. Oh.. and not only can they handle the roof and vinyl siding, they can also get rid of the tree. One-stop-shopping. Me likey!

Look on AngiesList!
I actually thought about suggesting Angie's List, but I wasn't sure if it was a national thing. I joined that when we got our central air replaced. That was a big (and expensive) project, so it was worth the $12 (or whatever it was) to join to make sure I got a reliable contractor...

Happy Birthday, Aiden!

Poor bunny... and he wasn't even a chocolate Easter sort of tragedy

LOL at the choco bunnies!

Thanks for the sympathy, but I have to say, as the sting wears off, I really feel like I dodged a major bullet. Imagine if I left my job, disprupted my family only to get down there and find out how they treat people! What a mess that would have been. Someone was definitely looking out for me!

Missy - you can hear in your posts how much better things are. That makes me smile!

Thinking of KJ...I hope you are doing well this week, my friend!

Hi all - just trying to get stuff done at work. I'm among the many who are wondering if the dunderheads on Capitol Hill will get their act together or not, and if not, whether we are considered "essential" or not. All this uncertainty is just kinda' making me supah-grumpy at this point.

But others have it worse for sure - vibes out to Japan, and hugs to (((Maureen, Lori, Shannon and anyone else who needs 'em)))

Great job on the walls Prae and good luck on the contractor, Ailarie (my dad just had the fencing fixed on their house, and IMHO, they should've gotten someone else.)

Moon, I'm also frustrated by the clowns in Washington, although I clearly have less at stake in it than you do. It boggles my mind that those clowns are arguing over a paltry $60 Billion, when the country has a $14 Trillion defecit. What difference will $60 Billion make? Just sign something! Take the latest Republican proposal and the latest Democrat proposal, and split it down the middle! How hard is that??

I'm really starting to worry about this defecit. I don't know if it'll ever get addressed. Everybody claims to care about the defecit, but any time somebody tries to cut some spending, someone else screams bloody murder about how the cuts will destroy the country. So in other words, cutting spending is bad, but continuing to spend is also bad. I don't know what the solution is, or how those clowns can ever come to an agreement over it...

I would actually rather attempt to solve the nation's deficit than continue in this class. Ugh.

Well, just found out - no furlough for us. I guess it helps that we're one of the few federal departments who are more or less self-funded (via processing fees)

As far as the budget deficit, that's something that I think the very nature of political discourse in this country today makes almost impossible to fix, not that it was going to be easy to fix to begin with. There's three roughly equal-sized singular chunks in the budget right now (Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid, and Defense) and someone will scream bloody murder when anything related to those three is threatened.

That's why that other roughly-equal-sized chunk (so-called "Discretionary Spending", which encompasses a whole host of things) gets almost all the attention. Even if somehow all this discretionary spending gets eliminated, that's still only 20% off the top, based on the figures I've seen.

Moon, you're right. Somebody has to have to guts to raise the retirement age and the eligibility age for SS and Medicare, and then get us the hell out of Iraq, Afghanistan, Libyra, Egypt, and wherever the hell else we are. Let the rest of the world deal with themselves, we've got our own problems over here...

Please please please don't let me have roofing issues, ever. I can't imagine what it would cost to have a tile roof done.

Marier: SNORT! I'll find out tomorrow night how bad the damage is.

I mixed up some plaster and made a mold of a tile this evening, but I just pulled the clay out and I have air bubbles. pffththt. I really should re-make the tile and do another one, and make the plaster thinner so it fills in spaces better.
