I got a new computer

<p>with my school computer out of commission until <em>at least</em> the beginning of next week combined with the fact that my IT person is going to KILL me when I bring her my computer to be de-infected again, I decided to break down and get a laptop to use at home for all of my "personal" stuff. </p>

<p>this is the 3rd time I've gotten a major virus over the summer bc the anti virus software doesn't work unless I'm connected to the network at school.  each time, my computer had to wiped clean.  <img alt="" src="http://files.kickrunners.com/smilies/cool.gif" style="width:16px;height:16px;" title=""></p>

<p>We got a new pc and windows 7 doesn't seem bad actually.  I have 2007 at work and don't love it either, but it will take getting used to.  </p>
<p>make sure you get some GOOD virus software on your PC and firewall program, and keep them updated and learn how to use them.  If you get a major problem on your PERSONAL pc, you'll be happy you did. Also, invest in an external drive and backup important stuff often. <br>

It took me months to get used to 2007, which seemingly overnight became our company standard.  Once I added all the things I normally use to the quick access toolbar, and minimized the ribbon ... it was MUCH better.</p>

<p>I use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and keep protection running.  After having my personal pc infected via file transfer (from a website I maintain - our host ended up with an infected server),  and having to rebuild my entire laptop, it was worth the extra $. So far it seems to catch everything.</p>

<p>Another thing that you should do is backup your PC periodically as Images - meaning you get an "Image" of your system on your external backup drive.  If you then get a bad virus, you can simply restore your system from the most recent Image backup and it goes back to exactly that state.  Voila.  No virius.</p>

<p>Then of course you'll need to restore from your regular backup whatever files you've updated/created since the Image was saved to bring them up to the latest and greatest ...</p>

<p>Another thing to consider is getting online backup for your data - things like fires, thefts, and/or backup hard drives going bad do happen and its nice to have a third place to have your important stuff JIC the worse happens</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Carbonite has all those radio ads and the like...I went with Backblaze and have been happy with it</p>
