<b>1. Why do you run?</b><br>
I began running back when in my first year of grad school in 1992 because I was out of shape. I casually ran and when someone mentioned going to do the Falmouth Road Race, it sounded like fun and a reason to drink afterwards. I had a blast and finished it in like 1:10. The next spring I realized this was the last time I would have a lot of free time, so I quit my part time job and began to run a lot and decided I'd do my first marathon. My friend Keith ran Boston every year, so I got a lot of good advice from him. I ran the hilly NH Marathon and finished in 4:27 and was very discouraged, but I realized that with good training I could do better. The next fall I ran Baystate in 3:39. Then I won a lottery to run the 100th Boston in '96 and finished in 3:53 after an injury filled winter. Shin splints. I could never get rid of them after that. I went to physical therapy and podiatrists, got orthodics and nothing worked. Every time I'd try to run, they would hurt for 2 years after that. I got fat and out of shape again. it wasn't until I tried new shoes that things got better. I wore the Gel Kayanos and things improved. They had more cushioning than most pronating shoes, so i was able to run better. In '99 I decided to do Boston again with TNT. Just as training was beginning I needed new shoes and my shins were somewhat bothering me again. At the suggestion of the coach, I went to Marathon Sports where they fitted me with cushioning shoes and not pronating shoes. End of shin splints and beginning of new running career. Just like that.<br><br>
So, why do I run? To stay in shape, stay sane and feed my competitive nature.<br><br><b>2. What is your greatest accomplishment?</b><br>
Running-wise: Setting a 13+ min. PR on my 40th birthday last year at Chicago in 3:01:15. Right behind it is my first BQ, after crashing and burning in marathons for the 3 years, finishing no better than 3:25, I finally broke through with a 3:14.<br><br>
I still like to mention my 2 no-hitters when I was 15 before I ruined my arm trying to play quarterback.<br><br>
Professional-wise: Passing the CPA exam and reaching the level I'm currently at in my job even though I hate it.<br><br>
I also need to mention my 2 wonderful children. They are intelligent, athletic and have huge hearts.<br><br><b>3. What is your motto/theme song?</b><br><br>
Motto: You can do anything you put your mind to.<br>
Theme Song: None.<br><br><b>4. How do you deal with bad runs?</b><br>
With a grain of salt. Bad runs are the result of something that happened either before or during the run. There's always a reason for it. Lack of sleep, running too hard or too much beforehand, not enough water, going out too fast, coming down with something or stress. Bad runs teach a person a lot.<br><br><b>5. Do you reward yourself for good runs? How?</b><br>
Sometimes I'll eat a bit more or have something I wouldn't normally eat. Sometimes an ice bath. Sometimes nothing. It depends.<br><br><b>6. Who do you admire most?</b><br>
My dad. Whenever I'm having any sort of problem and need some advice, I always go to him. If I have as much integrity as he has in his pinky, I'm doing okay.<br><br><b>7. What is the greatest advice you have ever received?</b><br>
Don't sweat the small things. I wish I could listen to that advice more often. I beat myself up too much when things don't go exactly as planned.<br><br><b>8. What do wish you had learned younger?</b><br>
That I was more overweight than I had previously thought. Right now I weigh less than I did why I graduated from high school. I thought my ideal weight was about 190-195. Little did I know that it's around 170-175. I didn't find out until Zpoint2 and I started losing weight 2 years ago to try and get faster by using Fitday. It worked.<br><br><b>9. What do you wish you could do but can't?</b><br>
Retire. I just wish I could run and relax all day long. Oh, wait I do that anyway. I barely work anyway! <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.kickrunners.com/forum/images/smilies/razz.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="Razz"><br><br><b>10. How would your friends describe your personality?</b><br>
Caring, funny, down to earth, yet serious.<br><br><b>11. What do you wear running? favorite outfit?</b><br>
Summer: Shorts and a running short sleeved running shirt.<br>
Winter: Running pants and layers of short and long sleeved running shirts with a hat and mittens. I can't wear gloves, my fingers freezed. I also wear a gaiter around my neck and face when it drops below 15F or so.<br><br><b>12. What has been your favorite race?</b><br>
Chicago because of my PR and it was the last time my wife and I had actually had fun together.<br><br>
The funnest race is Reach the Beach by far. I'm always on a high for 2-3 weeks afterwards.<br><br><b>13. Do you have a goal race right now?</b><br>
Philly is sort of a goal race, but I just decided to run that recently, so I'm not expecting big things. I'm planning on training hard for Boston, so I guess you could say that's more of a goal race for me.<br><br><b>14. What makes you happy?</b><br>
New running gear, running in general, PRs, my kids, being loved, being in love, money, sex and cocaine & hookers.
