For what its worth this place never got nearly as toxic as the old Cool Running Club House. That place was truly an example of what self moderation results in - meaness, dog piles, insults, racist comments, etc. Expecting people IVL to behave as they do IRL is not reasonable - the monitor and keyboard insulate us too much from the repercussions of our asshattery. I'm a prime example - I'd never say 1/2 the crappy shit I do if this was RL.

We need clear simple rules and consistent enforcement.

1. No racist or sexist comments.
Threads or posts that break the rules will be locked or deleted outright. Moderators will explain publicly why it was done.

Members who break the rules will be banned after three offenses. Moderators set the length of the ban and determine if/when the member will be allowed back.

These rules suck!

I don't think you'd have too many members at your site.

I think these rules suck!

They must have been made by a Canadian. I'm gonna kick his arse!

I once recieved a pm from someone here saying a certain something about sombody else, that most people would be very interested in. Howerver, discretion keeps me from telling everyone else that it was dg1.

Dude.

If people thrive on attention then stop giving them attention (moderation, taking away avatars = attention).

Not to mention that taking away avatars is lust lame, IMHO. I'm sorry, but it just is.

On the surface - it does sound lame. However, unfortunately - and it has been done - people have used their avatar as an offensive post.

we wouldn't have to deal with removing peoples avatars, if people could act civilized.

Those who thrive on attention get it - even if we don't 'moderate' - because there is always at least one person who will respond and then it goes on and on. If everyone used the 'ignore' function - and if 'everyone' kept to the rules everyone agreed to when you joined (yeah - most don't read them - they just click, "I agree" - then we would never have anyone moderated or banned.

We've had people who have been placed in moderation that are now active members. Banning would have prevented that from occurring. Moderation is our way of trying to keep things from getting further from 'sensibilities'. Only one person has been in moderation for any length of time - because they simply don't want to abide by the rules. That's pretty much the determinant on how long one stays in moderation.

Wish we didn't have to do it - wish we didn't have to even consider it.

But - wishing only works with coins and fountains.

The avatars that were taken away were in no way offensive. They had been up for quite some time until you decided you wanted to exert your power.

Again...the ever-changing rules of which I spoke earlier.

Decide what the rules are. Decide what the consequences are. Then leave them alone.

Mean what you say and say what you mean. Simple.

MrsCoby:

The permissions of the 'user group' removes the avatars - it wasn't done because your avatar was offensive.

Moderation isn't permanent - it's up to those in moderation when they come out of moderation.

Your PMs work to communicate with the admin (myself) - feel free to drop me a note to discuss.

I've approved your posts on this thread because I actually believe you have made valid points and are looking for a resolution. It is appreciated.

I was askeerd of it and never posted there and rarely looked in ... seemed very cliquish and uninviting to an outsider/newbie, imho.
