I've tested 11 "fun size" packs of M&Ms over the past 2 weeks, because I suspected that the "fun sizes" weren't very fun at all... but I needed empirical data to support my opinion...

Methodology:
Fun Size packs were used from 2 different bags, purchased 1 month apart. Packs were opened, and contents were emptied onto a desk, at which point the M&M's were counted and recorded (and eaten).

As you can see from the above graph, the average number of M&M's were 6.91 per pack, with 7 being the most frequent by far.

There was no significant difference in the number of M&Ms per pack by bag (bag 1 = 6.83, bag 2=7.00).

It appears that Mars/M&M is going for 7 M&M's per pack... in which case they need to step up QC as 27.3% of all packs contained an amount other than 7.

They claim that there are 90 calories per pack, which means that (presuming 7/pack) each M&M contains 12.86 calories.

All of this proves that "Fun Size" packs are not even close to fun, as a snack can't be fun until it reaches a minimum 185 calorie threshold.
