I dunno.. but prior to his testing, I'd spent hours on line researching this - and all of the major sites discussing Prostrate Cancer and elevated PSA's suggested exactly what he did.

Blood Test for Free PSA and if that came back uncertain - 30 days of antibiotics and then retest.

He didn't say BPH was the issue, though my prostrate is slightly larger than normal - and it has been since my last physical... I guess if it continues he may choose to put me on something for that...

I just wasn't looking forward to the biopsy - which would have been the next step had the test results were still high/undetermined...

Still not following the logic here. First let me say that I'm glad your numbers are lower, but the line isn't linear.

High PSA --> retest with free PSA --> results none diagnotic --> 30 days of ABX therapy --> PSA back to normal.

I would ask for a re-test in a month or so once the ABX have cleared your system. Depending on the methodology used in the assy of the test, the abx could interfere with the analyte being tested. Some drugs bind with the reagents and cause false lows.

I'm not saying this is what's going on, and I hope that I am 100% wrong, but I would get re-tested in a bit just to make sure.

Then again, I'm sure the doc knows what they are doing. They see this all the time.

May your stream be forceful and leave you empty.

Thanks for the input.. I will discuss with my GP and will share with him what you suggested. Do you have a site to which you can refer me that would explain what you just said. I'd rather refer him to the site instead of, "This guy on my runners site...."

and AMEN to your 'blessing'!!!

edited to add that 'Pete' is really ME! (satfix).. it's my test account to test permissions for the different modules...

I'm a Medical Technologist (Stupid name for a lab rat) and I analyze PSA's all the time. The list of interfering substances is 10 pages long.

They know that. I think. Now that I think about it, they may not know, why would they? (They being physicians.) I think the report has a disclaimer on the bottom that lists some interfering substances. I'll check and get back to you.

Wow dude. Glad all is well.

I had a breast biopsy a few years ago....and I only had to wait a few days for the "all clear." I can't imagine what you went through.

And don't look now, but Ilene is getting rather close to Rich Jr. there.

Phew Rich. I'm glad things appear to be resolved.

From personal experience...I know how awful it is to get the referral. Even at 13...I knew.

Walk in Clinic Doc: "Weeeell, it might be mono, but you should be seen by your pediatrician."

Pediatrician: "Weeeeell, it might be mono, but you should be seen by an oncologist."

Oncologist: "Weeeell, it might be mono, but we want to do a biopsy on that lymph node and make sure...because mono doesn't usually present itself that way."

Me at 13: "oh. But it's not cancer, right?"

Wrong.

Rich, I'm so glad to read that you're ok. And I'm assuming this is what the vibe request was for a few weeks ago? If so, glad our good vibes helped your prostate.

Glad you're ok, it's sure scary when the Drs do that to you. My urologist told me that a simple urine/bladder infection can cause the PSA test to show really high numbers.

Gotta love the logic of diagnostic medicine ... " You're just fine... but it took 30 days to figure it out... but we do see that your stress indicators are bit high now!"

LOrdy ! Glad it was negative for cancer in the end ( i know bad pun Yikes ! )
