The dumbest thing the Republicans can do in 2012 is nominate Sarah Palin. The second-dumbest would be to nominate Newt Gingrich.

Not far down the list would be to nominate retreads like Mike Huckabee or Mitt Romeny.

Also right up there would be to nominate Jeb Bush.

While I will never underestimate how stupid the Republicans can be, I have to think they are smart enough to realize that none of those people are the right answer. And especially since right now the public pretty much hates any politican they know, the Republicans are probably best off nominating someone who is relatively unknown now. It worked very well for Obama in 2008, since nobody knew anything about him other than the fact that he's black. Here are some candidates that I think all have a better chance in 2012 than any of the ones I named above.

Mitch Daniels, governor of Indiana

Bobby Jindal, governor of Louisiana

Haley Barbour, governor of Mississippi

Tim Pawlenty, governor of Minnesota

David Patraeus, U.S. Army general

I'm a little skeptical about Barbour's chances to win a nationwide general election because he's got a little too much "Good Ole Boy" in him. But the others are all candidates will be much harder to kick around than people like Palin or Gingrich, etc...
