On this day in 1943 rock singer Janis Joplin was born in Port Arthur, Texas.

Found the Warden's Husband out front at 6:30 this morning just as Iron Boy was coming down the road. We picked up the Diesel at her corner and the Andy Man about a mile out. A comfortable 25F meant a pleasant run as we circled a local pond with miles ticking by as the conversation flowed. Mile 7 meant a stop at the 7-11 for more Gatorade and as we left, right where the drive merges to the road, The Diesel found an ice patch. Momentarily suspended in air with feet turning like a desperate comic book character, the Andy Man nearly caught her by her right arm. Instead, her left arm hit the ground at an awkward angle and she was in pain. We made a quick 911 call, took shelter in the 7-11, called Mr. Diesel... The EMTs checked her out and provided a splint - she declined ambulance transport and left with a grumpy Mr. Diesel. Hope she's OK. The rest of us, now chilled from the stop in wet clothes, returned to the roads for a somber four miles home.

Another super busy weekend in store for me: Sat: long run, work on old house, look at wedding bands, have a few beers. Sun: trainer/brick, swim, work on old house, Patriots. And somewhere in there I have to find time to get in touch with a guy selling firewood. I'm addicted to my new fireplace, the first time in my life I've had one.

Me...

16 (?) mile run exactly as LRR details. Feel reallly bad about The Deisel. That little engine that could just has the worst luck. Maybe it's the folks she's transporting .

Didn't Janis Jalopoly play in a band with the early Greatful Dead?

45 minute fartlek run when the sun finally decides to rise. I don't like running in the dark. I think I'll make french toast for breakfast...mmm. Errands today including shopping for new running shoes.

BrewDad is making noise about hitting up some of the beverage emporiums in town to find some of the extremely popular Deschutes Abyss. I guess it's a barrel aged imperial stout with cherry & vanilla that was declared the best stout in the world so when the Brewery releases it, it goes fast, like Cabbage Patch kid fast. I heard someone called our local grocery here from New York and asked to buy all 10 cases, damn the cost. They didn't bite...preferred to keep it local.

6-freakin'-degrees here in central Indiana....brrrrr....

Met up with my training group and did 4 miles. Since I'm working with the beginning runners, we did 3-run, 2 min walk-- waaaaaayyyyy too cold for that. My legs were frozen the whole time. But all my runners did well, and for some of them it was the longest distance they'd done. Hopefully next time it's 6 degrees I'll get a faster group!!

I'm hoping to get a short run today.
Also, gotta replace the thin road tires with the original ones on my old hybrid, so I can go "mountain biking" with a friend... have been procrastinating this for a while, and I"m not even sure if the hybrid could handle trails, or if the tubes will feel the larger tires...

went to the garage for my bike this morning and the back wheel wouldn't rotate! odd. looked like the brake block was catching so first thought was : it's been knocked. hmmm. closer inspection and it looks like the wheel itself is buckled. even odder. was okay last time I rode. closer inspection and one of the spokes is loose and has sheared off at the hub! The hub was broke. I've done sub 200 miles on this bike. Boll ox.
so, to salvage something from the day i went for a swim and had a mini-breakthrough. I was watching you tube clips of Popov last night and trying to visualise some of the rhythm while I swam really worked!! Felt totally relaxed and just kept ploughing. every so often I'd do a length of breaststoke as a breather. Swam 800m in 22 minutes, and for the first time I now know I can swim a HIM cut-off however unstylishly and it's given me a confidence boost. So a silver-lining from the broken wheel.

Second silver-lining came when I took the bike to the shop to drop off for the replacement wheel (warranty so no cost). i got chatting to the guy in the shop and he takes his holidays cycling in the French alps every year. Was really knowledgable and a really nice guy and advised me to get a new chain-ring for my bike for more lower gears in the hills (the cassette is already good at 12-27 apparently). So not a great day as i've missed a long ride, but probably a long term win in finding a new buddy who knows his stuff!! I came home and entered the Chester Triathlon for June 22nd, so my season is taking shape: 2*OLY B races (June 22 and Aug 10) and the biggy in Monaco on Sep 7th, which I'm suddenly feeling good about.

Poor Diesel!

90 minutes on the trainer watching superbad.

When it came to brick time it was freezing rain. Now it's snowing. Maybe I'll get out for a quick 2 miler later.

My hippy sister who quit her job and hubby 6 months ago and who is 31 and lives at home w/dad (he likes it-free housekeeping) has a tree stump carved with Joplin's face. She had a cat named Bobby McGee...

If roads are clear later Mr T and I are going to a wine and cheese party. A match made in heaven!

Diesel--sending healing vibes!!! And enjoy the Vicodin... Broken elbows suck. I broke mine when hubby squirted me in the kitchen with the garden hose.

teacherjen--could you PLEASE keep those cold temps? They're supposed to be here tomorrow. So much for my road ride...

Got out for my run while it was still dark. Quite enjoyable to be out there while the rest of the world is still sleeping. 25* so it wasn't too bad. Did my usual route into and out of the rivervalley. Then turned aorund--into a headwind! One part of my route with the lay of the land the wind is funneled, adding about 10mph. Add that to the already 20mph wind... My eyeballs froze! Got home and discovered the temp had dropped 5*. Decent run, although wish I could have turned in better numbers. I had a 15m race next weekend... 10m, 1:28:28, 8:51pace.

Coach had me down for a 30:00 ride. Had hoped to do a road ride. Uh, not happening!!! So I sat on the trainer and thawed a bit.

Tomorrow coach has me down for a road ride. Since teacherjen is sending the cold temps this a-way, ain't no way I'm doing that!!!

Healing vibes to The Diesel, that sounds like a slow painful recovery in store.

Just some light weights and a short easy swim for me this morning, needed to get some sort of workout without aggravating the knees. I think I succeeded. I hope I succeeded.

That stinks for the Diesel. Hopefully she'll be chugging along again soon.

4BM - I'll think warm thoughts for your ride tomorrow. I don't have any warm weather to send you as it's supposed to be 20 degrees around here.

Rest day for me. We wandered around the conservatory at Longwood gardens, and got my garden fix. It's so beautiful, it's easy to forget it's January.

well today i voluntarily went outside and ran in 35 degree weather. Seems someone left the freezer door open and there was frost on the ground this morning.
nice easy 2.5 mile run on the 1st day of my half marathon training. Group met up and we all introduced ourselves and then away went. It actually felt good to be running outside with a group of people, I can say it beats the treadmill , however i still dont like the cold. I guess i need to buy gloves then i wouldnt be such a baby about it.

Oh, I hope The Diesel heals quickly - is she the one who was training for marathon?

Me... 10K tune-up race in 13F with 25+mph wind (-7F windchill!!). The temp wasn't horribly bad but we ran straight into the wind for about 1/4 of the 5K course (10K runners had to this twice!!) and I couldn't go anywhere. For the both loops, I let this guy pass me so that I could stay right behind him so at least I could move forward. I could manage only 7;31pace and ave HR stayed below LT. Only 60 brave souls ran 10K and I was 11th OA and 1st OA F out of 21 women. It was a good speedwork in the middle of a heavy training week so I will take that with a pride. Today's lesson: I ain't going to run 26.2 nowhere near this kind of condition in the middle of Ohio!!!!

Ran 8 miles on track at gym at 7:45 pace. My calfs keep tightening when I do the harder workouts, so I'm going long and easy for a month to build strength in my legs, and build cardio base too. I've never really logged alot of miles before, just went right into the hard stuff.

Sorry to hear about the Diesel. I'll send some healing vibes her way.

A chilly 1 deg F here in Chicago with wind chills down to -15 deg F. I had tempo work on my schedule. Spoke with the coach yesterday, I let her talk me into the fact that I wasn't going to get an effective workout in this kind of cold (it didn't take a lot of convincing). So it was in on the dreadmill again.

Popped my Firefly DVD in and went for a two hour run.

15 min WU
10 min z4 (started out at 6 min pace, ended up at 6:25)
2 min easy (10 min pace)
10 min z4 (6:25 pace)
1 hr easy (8:33 pace)
Covered about 15.6 miles.

Have a great weekend everybody!

I'm not exactly sure who Diesel is, but I'm sending some healing vibes!!

It's snowing here, big news for NC!! Big pretty white flakes; oughta make for a giant traffic mess in a couple hours

1 hour 40 minutes on the elliptical. Pretty boring, but I didn't go completely insane. Hope to be able to run again next week - ART is working fabulously, and I have new orthotics on order.
