On this day in 1994 was The Cando event, a possible bolide impact in Cando, Spain. Witnesses claim to have seen a fireball in the sky lasting for almost one minute. Some question the official explanation of the event.

A little snow/ice overnight and light freezing rain this morning here. I plan to spin at lunchtime.

Keep your eyes on the skies tri-peeps!

Last night 30 minutes on the bike with high resistence, low cadence. Not having much bike experience it is clear I need more of this type of workout to build quad strength. Followed bike by 1 mile treadmill in 7:50 not bad considering my quads were shot. Rest day today.

Not much running going on, so I'll add my swim.
That SwimPlan.com is a great site! Here is my 2nd w/o from there.

Duration 45-60 mins, Distance 2000yd, Pool length 25yd, Issued Jan 17 2008

Warm up
• 4 x 50yd Freestyle Swim (even pace), rest 0:15 / 50yd
Freestyle swim at a steady pace.

Build up (repeat 8 times)
• 1 x 25yd Single Arm (arm out front) 6 x left, 6 x right, 6 x full stroke, rest 0:10 / 25yd
Freestyle using one arm at a time, focusing on shoulder and hip rotation. Complete 6 arm strokes with the left arm then 6 strokes with the right arm followed by 6 strokes using both arms. The non-stroking arm is held out front in a streamlined position.
• 1 x 25yd Freestyle Catch Up, rest 0:10 / 25yd

Core
• 2 x 200yd Freestyle Swim, leave on 04:10 / 200yd
• 2 x 100yd Freestyle Swim, leave on 02:10 / 100yd
• 2 x 200yd Freestyle Swim, leave on 04:10 / 200yd
• 4 x 50yd Freestyle Swim, leave on 01:10 / 50yd
Freestyle swim, starting every set on the defined time period. The departure time combines your swimming target time and rest time, so the faster you go the more rest you will have. Conversely, the slower you swim, the less rest time you will have.

Warm down
• 4 x 50yd Easy Any Stroke, rest 0:15 / 50yd
Swim your choice of stroke, at a slow, relaxed pace.

Cold rain spells the day here in New England. Exactly what awaits the Chargers as they return home after the Patriots take their game to them.

Pro: Great swim this morning!

?: I never got that but hear it all the time: What does "0 dark thirty" mean? I'm smart enough to gather it means early in the morning, perhaps at some early hour 30 minutes past the hour... but what exactly does it mean?

Me...

3 mile very easy puddle jumper and slide-through in the pouring very cold rain early this morning. Rain was a degree away from being sleet. Ground frozen in spots. Slippery. But easy run. Followed by...

41 lap swim. 2 x 400 yard pick ups. ~:52-55 sec per 25 yards during pickups. Followed by single arm drills and catchup and even finger roll. Slowly getting toward more formal workout.

Recovery day for me. I might get to the pool tonight for an hour of easy drills, but that will be it.

Key 2 hr distance/tempo run tomorrow and temps in Chicagoland are predicted to be in the low single digits with windchill readings down to -15 deg F. Just don't know whether the tempo portions will be effective when its that cold and the wind is blowing that hard. But part of me also says that 2hrs on the dreadmill is going to be as annoying as all get out. Plus there's the pride factor of just being able to say I'm tougher than the weather.

TGIF everyone!

It's a badly quoted military term for a generic time in the very early morning. A soldier would refer to a time in the AM as something like "zero five thirty" - they'd be trained not to refer to a zero as an "oh" to avoid confusion with the letter. Those less disciplined would refer to the same time as "oh five thirty". It became popular back in the 60's (I've read) to refer to the non-specific hours early in the morning before anyone would want to wake up as "oh dark thirty".

oh. Thanks!

Speaking of "oh". Do you realize how programmed society is to replacing zero with oh when speaking? Very. And there are many, many times when they are incorrect, and if the listener followed what the person telling them was saying, they'd be incorrect. Telephone numbers are biggies.

THOR- O dark thirty when i was in was 0430.

todays workout was another swim breakthrough!! 150 yards warmup doing kick drills then 600 continous yards in 13:47(thats a 350 yard increase in 2 weeks). Rested and did and other 250 then hit the hottub for a poor mans massage. The hottub was the reason i was going to the gym, i wanted to have the jets massage my calf and ankle that has been bothering me.

Did some weights last night, which was nice. Felt good just to be at the gym. Knees are feeling aaaaalmost pain-free today. Might try swimming tomorrow. All next week will be weights and swimming, maybe some elliptical toward the weekend. Then re-introduce running (gently) the week after that, then ease back onto the bike the first week of February.

Look out universe, I'm a man with a plan!

So-so swim for me this morning. MS was supposed to be 6x100, 4x50. For some reason, I can't keep track of shorter sets. 100's turn out to be 150's because I don't rmember that first turn.

Then a slow run. Working on controlling HR. COLD and WINDY!!! So cold my braids froze. Part of my route is Last Chance for Boston. Lord help you if there is any wind, because once that wind gets a-blowing, it's so strong it nearly blows you backwards! 4.5 in 40:08.

Two hours 'til I get my hair cut!!!

Quick lunchtime swim - 1600 meters straight, every 3rd hard.
Spinning + abs class after work.

And, today marks the first Friday afternoon I've worked in over 5 years.

My company was acquired last week, so we join the regular workforce, with no half day Fridays. Everything else is either equivalent or better (healthcare, salary, paid time off...) so no complaints from me.

TGIF even if it is a full workday!
