On this day in 1935 aviator Amelia Earhart began a trip from Honolulu to Oakland, Calif., becoming the first woman to fly solo across the Pacific Ocean.

Struggled, but made it out of bed this morning for 1 mile swim as...

400y warm-up

500y easy

150y with flippers

150y drill up, swim back (l, r, catch-up)

150y pull buoy

150y drill up, swim back (l, r, catch-up)

300y cool-down

For three laps, I was faster than Thor teasing him to keep up. (Of course, I had flippers.)

For a brief moment today, I felt like I had it. My head was low and my hips were high, I was rotating, my kick was on, my elbow high, I was long and sleek gliding through the water... then came the next stroke.

Push the boundaries tri-peeps!

3.3 mile run this morning...(I used to think this was a 5K route, but then I mapped it...oh well. I still think of it as a 5K route). Took me 40-ish minutes to do...I forgot to remember the seconds after writing it down on my calendar this morning.

Getting out of bed was interesting....
My tv will also be an alarm clock, it's the backup for if I hit snooze on the clock too many times.
At 4:30 it comes on....and then I hear it invade my sleep gradually...so usually by 5 I'm fully aware.
So, what's on TV at 4:30? Yes, that's right....INFOmercials. Oy!
The same one
Every morning.
Boy....bowflex is really getting fancy these days.

But, when "bowflex man" as I affectionately refer to him, gets to gabbin' in the morning, it's rather like a coach calling you up and saying, "Get moving!!" That dude does not shut up. WAY to perky for me at that time of day.

On the good side of things, though...
My last mile was a whole minute faster than my first mile, and I didn't even feel close to puking at the very end.

Had a great workout last night. Did 36 min on bike pushing hard despite tired legs. Then jumped on treadmill for 2 mile brick at 8:15/mile which is probably close to race pace for a sprint. Was going under 8/mile for last bit. I think there is something to Thor's idea of runs following bike feeling good. I felt as though I could have gone longer but had to stop and get my son at basketball practice. Today is day of rest.

Playing trophy wife can be fun, as long as it's not an all the time thing. I only ever had to do the "trophy" thing once, and I had a blast.

Went to a wedding with someone....got all dressed UP....
Got hit on by gentlemen....really, they weren't creepy.
My date was awesome.....I remember telling myself, "your job is to be a good date and make him look good." It worked.

Then, weeks later, I was an inadvertent jerk to him and made him sad sad. I feel bad about that, but chalk it up to "young and stupid" at this point in life.

Lungs are feeling much better today! Good thing b/c we had 2700 yds of speedwork at the pool this morning. I'm gonna feel that tomorrow!

Something new and different...I think I may have an injury, but I am having such a hard time pinning down where the pain is exactly. I've had shin splints, I've had stress fractures, so I have a history of issues with my lower legs, and the pain has always been quite localized and very easy for me to describe. This time there is discomfort that sort of 'moves around' my lower legs if that makes any sense. First it feels like shin splints, then my outer shins hurt. Then it sort of feels like my achilles. I'm so confused I have an appointment with a podiatrist next week, but any thoughts out there?

Happy Friday everyone

My personal first line of defense for that kind of issue is a really good massage.

First, it just plain feels good.
Second, it might be tightness in your calves that is causing it....
STRETCH STRETCH.........

My podiatrist always wants to put people in casts. Sheesh. I had to tell him, Uh, no...not a cast....let's be a little more resonable in our decision making.

New England braces itself for a weekend of football. Talk everywhere has rather abruptly changed from Hillary and Obama and McCain, oh my, to Patriot Football! Bring it on. Tomorrow night.

LRR: "Come on, dog... keep up." No thanks for making me snort water this morning. I was in the middle of a longer set when I couldn't contain that laugh. Was funny. Had to put it out of my mind because it kept bubbling up threatening to come out as an explosive yet highly disruptive laugh.

hobey: Yeah, chatty group this morning. Must be Friday.

The only trophy worthy of Tithers is GOLD. Or is that rusted copper? Nah, Gold. She's an Ironbabe.

Me...

4+ mile puddle jumper run in absolute pouring rain. At 34 degrees and all rain, it turned very cold, especially after splashing in the first few puddles and definitely after that car got me good with a spray turned wave so tall it would've made a Southern California surfer jealous. Looked for The Deisel, who was suppose to be there, and I looked, and I looked, and I finally went on. Followed by...

40 lap swim. Two ~8 lap pickups. Followed by single arm and catch up drills. Even kicked two lengths on my side. That was fun. Legs burned.

Well, I'm stretching and strengthening religiously, and I use the 'stick' on both calves about 2-3 times/day. I also just made an appointment for Active Release Techinique - turns out my insurance covers this, who knew? Ugh, my lower legs are like rebellious little children

Ooo.....
I would love to try ART some time on my shoulders/neck/back.
I can't get it here, I'd have to drive to Tither's house to find it!

My calves have been tight lately, to the point of starting to feel that special "ungood" feeling in the bottoms of my feet.

I sticked my feet and calf and hammies and quads...morning and night.
I stretched seated and leaning forward
I stretched on my back with a tube/band around my foot....pulling back toward my head....
I did the standing stretches....lunge position....
I also did a different calf stretch with my toe in the air....the railing around the lake at my gym is just the right place for me to put my toe on it...and lean forward with a bent knee (am I making sense?)...it stretches the OTHER calf muscle.
I managed to nip it in the bud, but am having to remember to keep doing it regularly.

I don't know what to do. Today is my last half-day Friday (my company is being bought and we're losing this nice perq). How better to celebrate my last Friday afternoon of freedom than to ride my bike outside. Problem is it's drizzling right now and supposed to continue until 3pm. But, it's also supposed to reach 50 degrees. - would you ride in 50 degrees and drizzle? I think I'm going to do it.

My other option is the stationary bike at the Y, which might drive me insane and sounds like the antithesis of freedom. I know, I need a trainer.

The Oddsmakers have the low seeds everywhere. We'll see. The Pats really can't win. If they take the StuperBowl, it's "ho hum, what did you expect of a 16-0 team?" If they don't, the undefeated season is overshadowed by the post-season flame-out. I just hope the games are exciting so I can stay awake and drink more beer!

Rest day for me today. Last night I did 40 min on the stationary bike, hill route level 12. Discovered that the high-cadence stuff hurts my knees, but if I keep the cadence down I can push as hard as I want with no pain. Odd. Today my right knee, which is the one that has hurt the worst, feels great - no pain whatsoever. The left knee hurts inside, which is NOT where the pain has been all this time. Don't know what that means. Will try another short road ride this Sunday. I think I might be back to bike commuting in a week or so, just in time for the coldest weather of the year.
