Not so much a word as a radio call sign. Our local NPR affiliate is WUNC in Chapel Hill. I swear that half the time it sounds like the announcers are saying

            "double-you-en-cee"

instead of

            "double-you you-en-cee"

Asterisk pronounced without the second 's'.

And fortunately, it seems like pronouncing 'ask' like 'ax' is going away.

When my kid was little he would say:

"humidity-fire" for "humidifier".

"Ledo" for "yellow"

and "shark" for "sharp". As in "you're looking shark today!"

We still use those.

One of my old bosses, a full grown woman who was a queen of malapropisms.

She would call medians "mediums" and work ethic became "work ethnic".

My mom, bless her spanish soul, would call our dog Bastard. His name was Buster.

Yours is not the only state to get butchered. My home state is not pronounced "Or-a-gone", it's "Ory-gun". I've even seen t-shirts that spell it this way (minus the dash) to get the point across.

(And if you want to get into geographical names, try Yachats [a small town on the Oregon coast] or Sequim [on the Puget Sound].)

Shoot, I was born, raised, and went to college there, and fortunately never was asked to pronounce Chequamegon.

You can also throw in Shawano, Wonewoc (say it backwards, and it's Cow-ee-now!), Weyauwega, and Nanaweyah Ominihekan.

Our last name. Yah, it's Polish. But, really, it's not that hard to pronounce. At the start of the school year, son2 corrected a teacher every day for two weeks. After that, he gave up and refused to answer when she butchered our last name. She asked why he didn't answer when she called his name. Well, if you would say it right...

When I was up in the UP of Michigan, I was quite confused by why Mackinac and Mackinaw were pronounced the same way. And it took me a bit to master Tahquamenon
