My boss just forwarded me an email about a sample collecting trip to Venezuela...I was referred to as critical. I think this means I have a big chance of actually going!

*so what if I have to spend the whole time collecting termites!

Great to get recognized, critical is great - but please check the travel safety sites for inforamtion. Ven is one place our industry does not allow women to travel alone - and kind of discourages business travel there in general. Kidnapping is a big business in the area. Ven is not very cozy with the US right now......

Its a big sample collecting group of apparently about 12 people and tons of equipment. They have approval from the Venezualian goverment but were warned not to go within 100 km of the Columbia border. I think a reporter from her in California would also be going with me.

First of all, congrats on being "critical"! It's nice to be needed.

As for a Vzla trip, feel free to PM me. I'm guessing you'd fly into Caracas (Maracaibo, really, on the coast) then head out from the city to wherever you're collecting? I can give you lots of tips on good things to do and bad things to avoid. Do you know where in Venezuela the trip is going? It's one of the most gorgeous countries in the world, with more variety of topography and ecology than you can imagine.

In the meantime, do not watch the movie "Sequestro Express"

So it sounds like its almost definately on and I would be traveling with a local reporter who wrote Oil on the Brain: Adventures from the Pump to the Pipeline (ie I wouldnt have to travel alone). She also lived in Venezuala for a few months once upon a time. We would then meet the caravan (a bunch of scientists from universities and industry) and travel south from Caracas for a few days and then escort the samples back to a University in Caracas (just the two of us then) and head home...we dont get to go on the whole 10 day adventure but I think it sounds exciting!

Have a great time! If you can, make it into your own 10 day trip- or more! I haven't been to Venezuela, but all of the folks that I have met in other countries in South America have been really friendly and fun.

Beware- once you start traveling, you will be hooked!
