I'm trying to decide whether to have wood flooring installed downstairs and on the stairs or just recarpet. My carpet is going on ten to eleven years old and it's time to change it out.

My primary concern is the dog and cat. Will they like wood floors or are they more comfortable with carpet? I've yet to be able to get an answer from either of them. But I'm thinking the wood floors would be easier to keep clean than the carpet.

I have a neighbor who installs wood floors and gives us a good discount from what it would normally cost. And he does excellent work. I just keep waffling between which way to go.

I think that you should do what you want, and forget about what animals want.

By the way, we have hardwood, and my dog and cat don't seem to care. The dog is a hoot, though, when you toss a ball or toy across the floor, and she skids into the cabinets. Also, when you get her real excited, and she starts up (or tries to) running fast, and her nails make it so she just stays running in place. it's great.

My first dog only knew carpet. Then we moved into an apartment with beautiful hardwood floors. She hated it! It took her a couple weeks but she finally adjusted.

We NEED to rip up the carpet in the living room/dining room. It's 20+yrs old and very worn. I want wood. I think it will be easier to keep clean. I can deal with fur tumble weeds. I can't deal with white carpet that is impossible to keep clean!

we couldn't afford real hardwood; instead, we've got SWEET high-end laminate throughout the house

we've got carpet in bedrooms only

I wanted the laminate, but DH insisted on carpet...meh...if he dies before me, guess what I'll be doing with the carpet?

fwiw, a friend had hardwood while raising two boys, and a few BIG FRICKIN' DOGS

She said the maintenance was brutal....

after 15 years, she switched to laminate, and has been very happy with it

Our house had hardwood and it needs some TLC. We have in the past gone back and forth over whether to carpet or refinish the floors. I like the hardwood. The upstairs is carpeted (over hardwood) and was like that when we bought the house. DH has been experimenting with some of the stairs, buffing/sanding and polyurethaning (sp?) and i think it will look good when it gets done. I think laminate is a good alternative too.

IF you go with carpeting, and have a pet concern, go with a berber carpet. It's the type least likely to get ripped up by dog and/or cat claws.

THat covers a span of about 12 feet. If that was on carpet it would have been a bitch to clean up.

Our house is all wood and ceramic. The dog likes the cool surfaces during the TX summer. But have a couple small rugs around for the dog to stretch out on in the winter. Also - if you have stairs - wood stairs will be tough for the dog to negotiate. That may be a good or a bad thing. Our's never comes upstairs any more. Just as well, she snores worse than i do.

We like our wood floors. The cats enjoy the fact that when they bat at something, it skids pretty far. Ours are old, so you can see parts that have been repaired. Since this would be new flooring, you could get some where pieces could be replaced in case of damage. As far as carpet goes, you might try carpet tiles like at www.flor.com. Those can also be replaced piece by piece in case of damage.

Taken by itself, this sounds wrong.
