Why do you run?
I started running to get over a break-up. I use it now for weight control and stress relief. I’m drastically out of shape at the moment and am looking to get back on the horse.

2. What is your greatest accomplishment?
Nothing in particular, but I was thinking today that for an extremely shy introverted person I’ve taken a few risks in my life. I took off for a 99% French speaking community when I was 20 for 6 weeks. I moved 1500 km away from everything familiar to me to teach in a northern Canadian town, where I knew no one.

3. What is your motto/theme song?
Education is never a waste.

4. How do you deal with bad runs?
I don’t run long enough to have many bad runs.

5. Do you reward yourself for good runs? How?
Chocolate. New running clothes. The benefits for running is that I can eat more of my favourite things.

6. Who do you admire most?
My grandmother. She raised 4 kids and ran a farm while her husband was at war for 4 years. She actively supported and campaigned for universal healthcare in her hometown in Saskatchewan when all the doctors were refusing to see patients. Her work provincially was one of the reasons why Canadians have universal healthcare. Everything I know about fairness and kindness came from her.

7. What is the greatest advice you have ever received?
Don’t buy trouble. I have a hard time remember it sometimes, but it works.

8. What do wish you had learned younger?
To play golf. My dad and I would’ve had much better more time together while he was alive if I hadn’t disliked golf so much when he bought me my first set of golf clubs and a golf membership. I caught on to it when I was 30 or so, but I wish that I could get that time back from 12 to 30.

9. What do you wish you could do but can't?
Speak French fluently.

10. How would your friends describe your personality?
Witty, caring, thoughtful. My friends will often seek me out with a problem, knowing that I will tell them what I think, play “devil’s advocate” and talk it through, rather than just tell them what to do or make a judgment on what they do. I wasn’t always like that. I’ve lost a couple friends from being judgmental first…so I mull things over so that I can be clear.

11. What do you wear running? favorite outfit?
Summer blue or purple running shorts with various tech singlets. Winter, long underwear, sweatpants or tights if I’m in a skinnier time of my life, tech shirt, fleece shell.

12. What has been your favorite race? I haven’t done that many of them but I guess it would be my first 8K in 1992. It was the first time that I realized that I could keep running and run because I enjoyed it, not just because I was upset at the world and my life and my ex.

13. Do you have a goal race right now? Anything over 5K. I’d really love to do a half marathon but I’m needing some major motivation and accountability.

14. What makes you happy?
Pretty simple things, a great meal, my cat sleeping at the end of my bed. Students understanding a concept or improving in reading skills.

15. Tell us one interesting thing about another user of this forum that has not been posted (at least not often) on this forum in the past (make sure the other person will not object to posting the info!).

When I was in the hospital this summer, Torque and Sierra got together to send me flowers. They signed the card with their real names, Karla and Brian. Well as it happens I know 2 other Karla’s, one quite well. I was missing her wedding because of the surgery. So I’m reading the card and I’m thinking it’s the other Karla and her fiancé and they just got the name wrong on the card. So I phone and leave a message thanking her for the flowers. It wasn’t until 3 days later that I was out and online that Sierra asked me if I got the flowers and it clicked that it was her. But then I’m thinking..”her husband’s name isn’t Brian…who the hell is Brian?“ doh – Torque”. What can I say folks they had just done neurosurgery, I guess was a little dopey.

Anyway, Sierra and Torque, you are two very kind individuals for thinking of me then and going the extra mile to send me flowers through timezones and international borders. Thanks so much again.
