This was a small local race on the trail just a few miles from our house that I run on regularly. The race was a fundraiser for the high school track team. The course is almost entirely on well maintained dirt trails and mostly flat - there was one small hill near the one mile mark and another about 200 yards from the finish. The weather had temps in the low 30s with a slight breeze from north.

I lined up in the front, right behind the guy who won this race last year. I was able to stay with the lead group for about a half mile then they pulled away. I just maintained my position after that until the end of the race. Much like the 10 mile race a few weeks ago, there was a guy a couple hundred yards ahead that I chased the rest of the race, but could never catch. It did help me hold a decent pace though.

My finish time was 35:37. That was good enough for 10th overall and 1st in my age group. Vicki came in at 46:03, which won her age group as well. That's the first time we both have won our age groups in the same race. This is a PR for me as well, the 7th PR since the beginning of the year.

I'm not sure when I'll race again. I would still like to get in another couple 20 milers. The next races I may do are on April 19 and there are several choices in different locations ranging from a 5K road race to a 25K trail race. I've never done any of these races before so I may scout out the courses to see what may be good for me. I'm leaning toward the 25K, but if the course has lots of obstacles I may do something else as I don't want to risk injury before the marathon in May.

Happy Running!

Thanks all. I'm on my second beer now.

Just saw the results online. I was 10/77 overall and 1/7 AG. My wife was 1/6 AG.

Although the race was won by a 23 year old, 7 out of the top 10 finishers were over 40. Then 8 out of the next 10 were under 30. Masters racers rule! LOL

Thanks.

The 15 miler was done at an average pace of 9:08 - a full 2 minutes per mile slower than I raced yesterday. I regularly run up to 2 hours without fluids and the 15 miler took around 2:18, so it was pushing the limits. When I do longer runs and carry fluid and gels, I find my body starts wanting stuff regularly as soon as I start ingesting. On a 21 miler I drank 60 ounces of water and had 2 gels and could have used another gel. I doubt I would ever get that much fluid during a race because the cups tend to be small.
