No, it's not a Kelly's Family tribute thread...

After so many months of injury-free workouts, today I go to this skiing hill (cause mountain is too big of a word) in the Poconos, and I go to the only double-diamond they have, and take my worst spill in years.

Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

My knees are all bruised, and swollen to almost twice the normal size, I'm limping and I hate my skis! Last time I had a nasty crash was 2 years ago, and I couldn't run for 10 days... and it was only one swollen knee. I hope it's something totally temporary this time.

It wasn't that bad at that time, I went to the lounge, had a few drinks and listened to a very cool band... then went back for another 2 hours of skiing. Second time at the bar, I wished I'd never have to get up from there. And now I'm on my laptop at the house, the gang went for some night skiing, and there's only basic cable here, nothing to watch than browse the Internet. Haha, there are 5 laptops laying around, this is indeed a geek's weekend out

Sorry to hear of your fall.
Heal quick!

I skied in HS a few times...never got great at it.....had some spectacular falls.
I had a great time, but I do think it's a young person's sport. snow's harder than it looks when you fall on the same hip every single time.

I love skiing, but I'm VERY cautious!! I even skiied when I was 5 months pregnant with my twins! I stayed on easy slopes, though.

Sorry about your spill. ICE those knees (maybe read the thread on ice baths?) When I got in my car wreck, I bruised both my knees so bad. I could run o.k., but I couldn't bike for 2 months! At least you can still swim. Isn't that your weakness anyway??

Hope you get healed up soon.

I love skiing. Several family members go to Angelfire NM every year for Mardi Gras. I havent been for a few years because I'm afraid of getting injured. I want to at least get an Ironman done before I ski again.

I hope your recovery is quick and you can start training again very soon.

It was only one. But it was no running at all for close to three weeks and I'm still feeling it. Strained MCL. Could have been worse. I'll heal. I hope you do too - and quickly. Ice is your friend.

And you know... We could all encase ourselves in bubble-wrap and never leave our homes and we wouldn't have near the injury risk that we expose ourselves to when we go skiing or hiking or climbing or play soccer or... But at least for me, the whole reason I do all this stupid tri-training is so I can do all those things! Traithlon is a means... not an end. Sure, I enjoy Triathlons - but they're not the only goal in my life. They're a motivation to help me keep in shape so I can do other things I want to do. I want to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. I want to take my kids whitewater rafting. I want to chase my kids through the glades! If I risk an injury that interferes with my triathlon career - so be it. I've come to the realization that my Olympic potential is somewhat limited anyway.

Hope you heal well and fast Chris

My Coach is never very happy with me going skiing - but as I tell him I am a much better skier than Triathlete (Not that being a good skiier makes us imune from falling or injury) but although I love Triathlon and am so motivated for my IM - Skiing is something I do with Dw and my boys so if i had to chose it would be skiing -

If I ever had to choose I am offically counting Skiing as part of multisport - so therefore I will still be staying here with you guys
I have been skiing this year. I mentioned something about it after a team workout and a couple of people were shocked and said they gave up skiing because it's too risky to triathlon. I had to think long and hard about that. Don't get me wrong, I love triathlon but life is risky and to sit around safely my whole life so I can swim/bike/run??? Not for me. I'd rather live life.

Better to injure yourself skiing than get carpal tunnel from the remote control, right????

Heal well and fast!!

Thanks for all the good wishes!

LRR said it best... Skiing is something I do for fun, as is triathlon. Giving up one fun for another kinda cancels out. So I wouldn't give up skiing, at least as long as I don't turn pro in triathlons It's enough I pretty much gave up soccer for fear of injuries...

They don't hurt that bad today, but they look ugly... and I doubt I could run, at least today. I was thinking biking would come easier, since there's no impact, so I'm surprised by what Kelli said. Maybe stick to kick-less swimming and upper body weights for a few days... And ice, although DW asked why I don't just kneel in the snow outside.

Btw, I know it can be worse, I had both legs broken while skiing when I was 5 (left) and 7 (right)... maybe too young to ski double-diamonds. Then didn't ski until I was 25.
