So tomorrow is the big day, my PMP exam, and I have been studying hard either on course or at home or holed up in a conference room since the Friday before last.

A younger colleague of mine dropped by to chat. He's the same personality profile as I am.

I asked if he were taking the IIBA (Business Analyst) courses that the department has been offering - 8 of them leading to a Masters Certificate and the IIBA exam. He said "I'm too busy. I've got this project work... yada yada".

I asked him who the bleep he thought he was. That knocked him for a loop.

I told him that every single one of the people on the courses was busy, had projects, had lives of their own. I pointed out that his own boss had taken valuable time away from the project to get her PMP. I laid in to him. Nobody but nobody BUT him will look after his own best interests, and if the company were footing the bill for education he was an idiot to turn that down. Was he thinking about his future? His family? His marketability? He slunk out.

He just dropped by and thanked me for being harsh with him. He's signed up.

He then said that I knew exactly the right words to use. Of course I did. I used them on me a year ago.
