Not having travelled to a race without family before this isn't something I'm accustomed to.

I am going to park in a rented car... what the heck do I do with the keys? I suppose I should just leave them in my checked bag at the finish, but if it were my car I'd not...

What have you done in similar situations?

Most of my running shorts have a little front inside pocket. If you take one key off of the key ring, it will fit in the little pocket.

Then you obsessively pat the little pocket at regular intervals to make sure the key has not been jostled out.

you can tie it to your shoe, or pin it in your shorts. If i have clothes with no pocket, i pin it inside my sports bra above my boob.

I take the single key and lace it into my shoe. But house keys are usually alot less bulky than car keys.

You could braid it into your beard.

I always wear running shorts with a key pocket. And then periodically I'll "feel" my pocket just to make sure the key is still there.

Oh hrm, with my car, I normally bring the car remote and tie it in my shoes.

If I actually have to carry a key, I tie it in my hair and put my hair in a bun.

If none of that works (which wouldn't in this circumstance) buy the little $6 key pocket from the running store or REI. You can buy one that goes on your shoes, or around your wrist. Very small and hardly noticeable.

FYI for next time: this is what I do. The little pocket also holds an emergency info (e.g., contact info; med info) and money.

I find that in an out of town race I only check the little key pocket about 35 times per mile to make sure it's still there.

I either lace it to my shoe, or run with my lanyard and hang it around my neck.

Most of my racing shorts have the little pocket so I put my key in there while attached to just a ring and then I safety pin the flap closed and through the ring so everything is tied together.

I have this little speedo "cell phone" case that just clips onto my waistband...I don't carry a cell phone, but I put the baggies for the dog and my keys in it. Convenient and out of the way.

Wisconites must be trusting...I stash it in the hub. I've tied it to my shoe before, but's it's just too much of a distraction.

If it's a big city, I put the remote in the hub and then stash the key inside, so an intruder has to work a little to get into my glove compartment. I've also just locked my key in the car on purpose once, because DH was coming to see me finish, which he did, but then he didn't bring an extra key. . Thank goodness for onstar and the fact that I parked in a ramp that had an open wall

I live alone so I have to tie a key into my shoelaces every time I go for a run (car or house). I have never lost it and I rarely notice it.

I'll put one of my race-travel tips:

Rental cars often have the keys all wired on this big cable thing, with a big plastic tag, the remote, and the keys. I like to thread the remote (only) through the drawstring of my shorts. With all that crap there, this (or any other key carrying technique) is hampered.

So in my checked luggage I now carry a mini-leatherman (with wire-snips) and a 3-pack of regular key rings I got cheap from Target. When I encounter one of those permanently-wired jobbies, it gets snipped. On race day I just take the remote off and lock the rest in the car.

The rental companies have never hassled me about getting it all back on a normal key ring.
