uhhhhhhhh ... we went to PA and ran for about 4 hours yesterday and just wanted to stop and buy a 6-pack to take to the hotel and have a couple brewskis before going to sleep to get up and run another 5-6 hours today ... geeeeesh, is that too much to ask?

apparently it was ... PA (at least the part we were in) does not sell beer at gas stations, grocery stores or even the same store that sells hard alcohol and wine? (WTF???) we had to go to a specific beer distributor ... which was a drive thru in this town(maybe in all PA towns?) and could only purchase beer by the case, no singles, 6-packs or 12 packs!

soooooo... we ask for Sam Adams Octoberfest and are fearful of the price ... alas ... they don't have it cold and our hotel has no fridge ... so we ask what they have cold ... it is Dundee Oktoberfest, which we are unfamiliar with but say we'll get anyways ... the guy hands us a bottle and says to taste it before we decide to buy the entire case ... uhhhhhhhhhhh, we're in a truck, driving, bwahahahahaaaa ... I taste it and say it's okay as I am VERY weirded out by this entire alcohol purchasing system we are being subjected to ... hubby takes a small swallow too and hands it back to the guy and tells him we'll go ahead and buy it ...

they put it in the back of the truck for us, upon our request ... take our money ... and then recap the one we tasted and hand it to us ...

OPEN CONTAINER??? Geeeeeeeeeeeeeee, thanks .... are you calling Roscoe P. Coletrain and telling us we're on our way? *yikes*

this was THE WEIRDEST purchase of any beverage I've ever experienced ...

I remember running into that issue one year when I was driving back to Purdue and I stopped somehwere in Western PA. I finally found a bar that would sell me a 6 pack. I ended up buying IC Light.

PA has arcane outdated liquor laws. Besides bars, there are some (but they can be hard to find) pizza joints and delis and stuff that sell beer, but it's expensive, and you can only buy two 6-packs at a time. Then you walk out, put them in your car, and walk back in and buy two more.

Otherwise, beer is sold at beer distributors, only a case at a time. Wine and Liquor are sold at State Stores.

They try changing the laws all the time, and it always gets shot down by lobbyists for various unions, or lobbyists for the beer distributors, and stuff.

If you had put that capped beer in the trunk, you probably would have been legal, since you could not access it while driving.

In order to buy beer you have to go to an State owned and operated Beer Store.

They don't have all the beers I like, for the Snooty beer, I have to go to the state owned and operated liquor store.

First thing I learned in Philly was which deli's you could by beer in.

Heaven forbid you live with an alcoholic coke-whore who realizes that she's out of cheap ass box wine upon waking on Sunday afternoon ... "So ... I gotta over to Jersey to 'rehydrate' your shagged out ass??? Hugs and kisses, slut"

The province got out of the liquour business about 15 years ago. Liquor stores abound. But it is not as convenient as in QC where you can buy wine and beer in convenience stores and only use the liquour stores for the hard stuff or fancy wines and beers.

Not true. Beer distributors and delis and the like are not owned by the state. Only liquor stores. (which means wine and spirits) They're actually called State Stores. (although some places have the sign, "Wine and Spirits Store")

That is, if you're talking about PA

In PA, since there is no "private" option, you pay the same everywhere in the state for wine/booze. The other annoyance is, you have to be NEAR a State Store...and also, they are closed on holidays and Sundays. Beer distrubutors, not sure if they can't be open on Sundays or not, but I never saw one open. the delis, though...no problem...I even bought beer at one on Easter Sunday once.

If you go across the river to NJ, prices are all over the place. if you go to a giant mega-discount liquor store, and know what you're looking for, you can get great deals (although these places also have not-so-good prices...you have to be an educated consumer). Some places that do NOT have great prices are the few (very few) grocery stores that also sell wine/beer/liquor. It's seen as a convenience, and they jack the prices up. With regard to liquor laws in NJ...there are some state ones (liquor licenses are doled out with regard to population in towns), but mostly the towns set them. So, for example, there is no state law that says no booze sold in grocery stores, but mostly its not done. There are also no laws with regard to hours. Most liquor stores in NJ close at 6 PM on Sundays...but, that's local. There is one in my town that is open until 10 PM. There are even towns here that are "dry".

If you go up to NY, they sell wine/liquor in one type of store, and beer in another as well. Same with CT. In CT...no alcohol sold on Sundays. In NY, no wine/liquor on Sundays, but beer is OK

Bottom line...it's different everywhere down here in the US...state to state. Which is, of course, pretty much what we're all about, the 10th Amendment and all...

I live in PA.

You can either get beer at a distributer (by the case), or at a 6-pack shop, or in certain restaurants/bars (for 6-packs).

I was very excited when Wegmans put in a beer area, but you can't check out your groceries at the same checkout as your beer, and there is a 2 6-pack limit.

Yeah, but here in CA, you can go anywhere; the grocery store, the corner market, the liquor store, the big box store, the dairy, the deli, etc. etc. etc. You don't have to go somewhere special or out of the way. It's just that I never realized it wasn't this way everywhere.

Indeed...though I will say I never heard of a brew-thru type store until I got out of CA (Michigan was my first experience with the concept, if I remember right)

Quote:

Wow. DW & I are considering a move sometime next year. The Pittsburg area is currently on our list of places to research & learn more about. I doubt this would be a deal breaker, but it'd certainly be an annoyance as we're nearly lushes. (We're also nearly luscious, but that's beside the point.)

In IL, we can buy liquor just about anywhere (except before 11 a.m. on Sunday).
