So far so good, but my work computer really, really does not like this site.

Not fitness yet today. I had to get up at 4:30 in order to leave for work at 5:15. Bleah. The good news is that I can get out at 2:30, so I may be able to go to the gym before picking the kids up.

Last night was one of the best runs I've had in a long, long time. It was great. I had 9 miles on my training schedule. I averaged a 9:25/mile pace and felt like I had lots to spare. There were no long walk breaks or bathroom stops. This gives me hope for the half marathon this weekend.

But Evelyn is going to drive me right round the twist. All of a sudden last week she decided she did not want to go to bed anymore. She cries, howls, screeches, for hours on end. I go in and she's standing in her bed so I lay her down, tell her it's time to go to sleep, and leave. And she just goes on and on. Last night she didn't fall asleep til 11 and then she woke up at 1 AM and didn't fall asleep again til 4 AM. I'm beat. And I really don't know what brought this on or how to fix it.

This morning she got a hold of one of DH's work markers (permanent) and drew all over her legs while I was putting my hair up in the bathroom. Nice.

Greetings all.

I completed my 5M on the hamster wheel last night, and will do the same tonight. zzzz. It was so beautiful this morning outside. Maybe 67 degrees w/ low humidity - cool (for what we've had lately) and crisp. It would have been a wonderful morning for a run. Alas, that thing called a job got in the way, so I got my bi/tri work done at least, while enjoying the beautiful scenery and air.

Clarebear - Ugh. I've no advice on what's possibly up with Evelyn. Has anything in her routine changed? New foods? Immunizations?

Morning peeps!

Already at the library, but I'm checking non-school stuff first before tackling some reading. My walk UPHILL from my parking lot (probably over a mile) counts as exercise, especially since I a) broke a sweat (ugh) and 2) I got my heart rate up nicely. Gah...going to try to hit yoga at the fitness center this evening.

Clare: I've got nothing, other than I believe it's a phase most kids go through at some point. I think you're doing the right thing by not picking her up but just repeatedly laying her down, and then leaving her. As a mom, I'm positive you know the difference between the "I don't want to sleep/be in my bed/be by myself" cry, and the "something is seriously wrong and I'm sick/hurt" cry. She will learn to soothe herself, and sleep again. Might take a couple days, might take a week....not sure. Stay strong mama!

As for the marker bit....early tattoo experimentation?

we've had a busy past few days with AK's birthday as the highlight. we had a small party at the bronx zoo which was a blast despite the torrential downpour. and AK thoroughly enjoyed her carrot cupcake - pics to come!

my beloved 96 year old grandmother passed late saturday night. it was a bittersweet birthday celebration in that we literally celebrated the circle of life - with one ending a full, inspiring life and one just barely beginning hers. nai nai was the most amazing woman i knew and was an example of unconditional love, loyalty, and wisdom. when she awoke briefly after surgery, she wept because she thought for a second she had passed and was reunited with my grandpa who passed in january at age 94 (they celebrated their 80th wedding anniversary last fall).

she was the most amazing woman i know, having had 10 children including self-delivering a baby on the "trail of tears" while escaping from the japanese army (a la joy luck club), tied him to her chest, and continued on her march with 5 other kids in tow. she was full of wisdom and life to the end and while she was ready to go, she is very much so missed.

with the loss of this great grandmother, allie-kate still has two alive - ages 101 and 95. thankfully for her, longevity runs on both sides of the family so DH and i will probably live to 125 or so.

the past few days have been busy with travel and work arrangements so that i can go home to L.A. attend her memorial services over labor day weekend (amy, we won't be headed to monticello anymore).

colleen, AK did a similar stunt for two days straight about 3 weeks ago (refused to sleep from 1-4:30am) it was TORTURE. no real explanation. teething? learned a new skill and wanted to practice it all night instead of sleep? missed your company? who the heck knows. babies are funny like that. hope it passes soooooooon b/c i know how painful it is.

Morning all.

Yay for good runs, swims and walks.

Clare - I agree that it is probably just a phase. Hopefully it won't last long. DS1 did this at one point (although not hesitation going to bed, he'd just wake up in the wee hours and refuse to go back to bed). It was a hard time for sure, so I can emphathize. Hope she finds sleep soon!

Gah - my workout this morning was HARD. I was scheduled for 11 with 5 x 1200m @ 5K pace; rests of 50-90% of workout. So I loaded the garmin up with 3:00 rests. Well, it was in the low 70s and 96% humidity. Yuck. I was soaking wet and my intervals were slower than they should have been, but by gauging my effort and HR, I was definitely working hard. Oh, and for most of them, I turned off the Garmin during the rests and took an extra minute or 2. Needless to say, I was glad to get it done. I haven't done any intervals/tempos in weeks.

Oof - I already have a headache though. Project rehydrate underway.

morning

yesterday's workout was just soooo bad. It was really hot and muggy out. I had also lifted on Monday night and ran hard over the weekend so immediately my legs were feeling it. We started out with a warm up that was way faster than normal and then we did 2-4 hill loops (about .4 mile each). This was to pre-fatigue our legs for the 7 miles tempo run..eekkk. I did 3 loops and waited to start the tempo with a couple of people. We opted to start out slow at about 830 and immediately one of the peeps was in trouble (found out later that she had just eaten cereal and a piece of cake all day..yep that'll kill ya). We never really were able to get into true tempo pace (814) and honestly I was scared to do so....afraid I was going to blow up hard. We stopped for water at about 3.8 into the tempo and I announced I was stopping at 5 (coach did say it was ok to cut if we weren't feeling well). That last 1.2 was my slowest and the most painful. I had complete tunnel vision and my stomach was a mess. booo. Ended up with over 9 miles and that was enough.

Opted to sleep in this morning rather than doing a shake out run. Hyland hills tonight

Clare, I'm sorry to hear about the troubles with Evelyn. My kiddo still doesn't like falling asleep on her own. Some days she might complain a little but then eventually settle down and let us leave her room. Other days she wails like we're torturing her when we walk out. She just doesn't like falling asleep alone, and we're having a really hard time breaking her of that...

I didn't work out yesterday. It had nothing to do with the earthquake. I had a dr appt and then had to pick up the kiddo. I tried to get her to come on a run with me in the jogging stroller, but she wanted to kick a ball around the yard instead. So we did that for nearly an hour. I guess that's a workout of some sort...

Nice workouts RIL & Brandy!!! Yeah the humidity is a killer no matter where you are.

Mindi - to continue the discussion on LT, keep this mind. You have to read between the lines in the Pfitz book. The key phrase when he says that LT pace is between 15K to HM pace is that he says that for "well trained runners." From reading his book, in my mind, what he considers to be a well trained runner would be someone like say PTom. Therefore, you must understand how to adapt some of his phrases to regular joes like us. Yout LT pace is based on your current level of fitness, not what you could or should be capable of doing. Jack Daniels explains this more clearly in his book Daniel's Running Formula (2nd edition). That's why as your training progresses and as the weather gets more favorable, your target paces should change. Daniels and other coaches would routinely have the trainer run a race or a time trial to get a new base point for training paces.

The attackpoint calculator will tell you exactly what your "Threshold" pace per mile should be based on your most recent race result.

I got in an easy 4 mile run early this morning. Planning on a 9 mile with my training buddies this afternoon. The weather should be teh suck!

Morning, friends. Back still bothering me, so I decided to rest it again today.

Diane, it sounds like you're feeling better. Sorry yesterday was so crappy.

clare, sorry your kiddo is torturing you. I hope she is so exhausted too that she falls right to sleep tonight. And good luck this weekend!

((((Missy)))) Losing someone is always hard, even if they are ready to go. That doesn't mean that we're ready to let them go.

Ann, it does sound like you're getting a nice daily workout with your uphill walk to work.

Ok, I'm tired, unmotivated, and really want to crawl back into bed. I will go to the coffee shop, though and do some reading. I think I can, I think I can, I think I can.

Have a good one!

((Missy)) - I totally get the full circle of life weekend. We had pre-planned baby M's baptism for the weekend we had to have my father-in-law's funeral. It's a very unsettling feeling. Sounds like you need to write a book about nai nai! I would love to read it!

Clare - I don't bother mentioning our sleep woes often, but there's typically at least one kid up too late or awake in the middle of the night at least 3 times a week in our house. It is exhausting. If you fix it, please bottle the fix, I'll buy it!

45 min on the elliptical + a 15 min walk for me. Likely to be a crazy day here, but I'm starting to accept crazy as the new normal :)

morning peeps.

I just applied for a job online at a local U...but I'm getting an SQL error and I have no idea if it went through or not. GRRRRR...stupid online applications!

((((((((((Missy)))))))))) I'm so sorry you've lost your grandmother. Who ever suggested you write a book about her was right, you really should. Take care of yourself and your family.

Oof, Clare, sorry to hear it. My sis' kids had a lot of sleep issues when her husband was overseas...I feel for you!

Great running, swimming, walking, working out, etc, peeps!

Prae, Bex, Kath...take care of those backs!

Speaking of...man oh man, am I sore from my massage yesterday. Oof.

Today, I'm in the office this morning, but I'm leaving early for an appointment. I hope to work on a sewing project I need to have done for Fri for a gallery show that opens this weekend...if I don't get it done today, I don't know when I will!

As far as sleep issues and kiddos, that can be a PIA. We had to ferberize #1 and #3 at various times. Hopefully you get some rest.

Reading this made me smile - Nai Nai sounds like an awesome woman. I am jealous of your genetics - I only had one grand parent growing up (my Dad actually graduated high school with no parents). I am sure you will have many wonderful tales of Nai Nai for Allie Kate.

So I slept in this morning after 2 nights of crap sleep, and don't regret it at all. May sneak in a run at lunch. Working form home today because my pellets are getting delivered.

G'morning all - a gaggle of nephews (and one niece) was over last night to run roughshod; I loved how one of them somewhat gave the scoop about his abcessed tooth to Kris via Skype last night while I tended to my Iron Gym (they just love to hang on that thing but occasionally they dislodge it from the frame, which is typically when they try to shut the door with the device still wedged in there)

Snuck in a 45 min cardio/strength combo thing beforehand. Really tried to pick it up for the first time in awhile; basically just alternated two sets of strength moves with one set of cardio activity with little to no rest between sets.

clare - I hope Evelyn settles down real soon. It also sounds like you're ready for your HM this weekend - woot!

Hugs to you ((((Missy)))) That was a wonderful statement about your grandmother, and I know it's hard to lose someone like that even when it is their time to go.

(((((Missy))))) As hard as it is to lose Nai Nai, I was moved and impressed by your beautiful description of her and her life. She sounds like a wonderful, strong, amazing woman, and you can see her imprint on YOU, because that's what you are too. I am truly sorry for your loss, friend.

Missy - you and I must have posted at the same time, so I missed it at first. So sorry to hear your grandmother died, but it was a lovely tribute. She sounds like an amazing person. I too am jealous of your genetics and abundance of living grandparents! Enjoy them. I miss my grandparents.

Timr - thanks for the further explanation and the link! Although it reinforces that I want to get out there and race b/c the numbers that popped up are WAY slower than I should be training. Which leads me to another...

QOD: How do you pace your long runs? The calculator Tim posted said I should be doing mine at a 9:43 pace. However, even when I am not in peak fitness, I always try to focus and run faster than that for long runs. I consider long runs key workouts and don't just slog them out. Once I have a base, my goal is typically to be at a 9 m/m pace or under. That is reasonably comfortable for me, but also requires me to focus a little and not slack off. Do you do LSD or do you try to keep them at a faster pace?
