...that's my heart every time that girl walks past...

I watch people. I don't do it all the time, but when I have a leisurely moment I do take the time to survey what is going on around me, and if nothing obvious is going on I make up stories about the passers-by. Sometimes I don't have to make them up.

We were grocery shopping this morning and while we were picking through fruits and veggies I caught sight of a pretty young woman, about 15 with long hair and a willing smile shopping with her mother. A bit further on, peeking furtively over the potatoes two rows away was a young man of about the same age. It was clear that he was smitten by the girl.

I went off in search of milk and peanut butter and I saw the young girl again, only this time she was being followed by the young man who was feigning non chalance behind her back. He moved slightly ahead and stopped on the opposite side of the aisle and picked something up at random, turned and said "Oh, hi Laurel!" She smiled and said "Hi Braden, how are you!" At that moment at the end of the aisle behind me a voice rang out... "Braden, what's keeping you so long?" He sagged, but smiled, "See you at school?" "Yeah, sure..." and Braden turned to go. I was going in that direction and watched him stride away pursposefully. As he turned the corner and passed out of sight of Laurel his shoulders sagged and there was an audible sigh, a sort of a deflation. His mother looked at what he had in his hands... "What do we need that for?" "I dunno."

Then I was off again on my errands.

I thought of being that age. He was a braver man than I was Gunga Din.

I thought of this song. David Francey gets it so right. "When you hear that sound like a rush of wind, it's just me catching my breath again..." Happy Valentines Day all.
