I have this crazy race - 10 legs of r/b/s/r/s/r/s/r/b/r - coming up in 10 days. One of the few open items I haven't solved yet is the leg #2 - biking.

Optioens are:

1. I won't change the shoes after running at Transition. Just ride with my running shoes (= I will change the pedals to the platform pedals). Once get to the next Transition, just stick the running shoes in my tri shorts and swim.

2. Change to the biking shoes at T and carry the running shoes in my back. At next T, leave the bike shoes with the bike, put the running shoes in the back and swim.

What would you do? Would I lose a lot of time by riding with the running shoes? It is 20mile ride. I don't think I like toe cages.

I'm doing some serious mental gymnastics trying to follow all that. Ten days might be enough time to get used to toe cages if you practice each day - that certainly seems like the ideal scenario for this type of race.

(p.s. - how do you stick running shoes in your tri shorts?! or would I rather not know????)

Kind of confusing without you spelling it out... but I think I figured it out.

Not really sure what to tell you. If the transition were the same for all legs, I'd go with bike shoes since you'll be out there for roughly an hour each time anyway.

But because you'd have to carry stuff, I'd probably still go with bike shoes but would do just as good with running shoes as long as you have toe cages and make sure that you get a snug enough fit to be able to use the full pedal stroke. I know that I, for one, do okay in toe cages because I make sure to get a snug fit while not getting stuck in them. Though of course I prefer cycling shoes.

Tough call. What's your gut say?

Ask Carol F. what she did when she did Battle of Waterloo. I can't remember what she did do, but I seem to remember that it worked out pretty well.

cak - I asked Carol every other questions but forgot about this one. Will talk to her.

Matt - I put the running shoes at the top of my tri shorts on my back. The shoes are performance light (KSwiss something, specifically for tri) Actually it is not too bad. Somebody suggested to put them at the legs, I haven't tried that yet but I don't think I will like that.

Thor - Maybe toe cage is the way to go. One less things to worry about....

Thanks guys.

I am thinking back to my adventure racing days. Personally, I would go with either running shoes/cages or bike shoes and carry the running shoes. 20 miles with regular pedals will drive you crazy - all push and no pull!

Good luck! Your race sounds like fun!

can you leave your bike shoes with the bike for the first bike leg like in a regular tri? and can you leave your bike shoes at the bike for the second one? if you can, I'd ride with the bike shoes.

I think that was option 2. :)

Monica - yes and yes. I can leave the bike shoes with the bike.... thank God that I wouldn't have to cross a lake with bike/bike shoes... ;)

1Topodope - yeah, that would drive me crazy too. I guess I am going to find out how uncomfortable to ride with my running shoes stuck in tri shorts.

I was just going to ask you about this. I would leave the bike shoes with the bike and carry the running shoes throughout (maybe in a tiny camelback?).

How long are the swim legs?

Could you tuck the shoes in the back of your top? Maybe have a bike jersey with back pockets that you leave with your bike?

Something like the Sexy Back tank from Skirt Sports? (looks like you could even swim in it)

I'm all confuzzled as to all the transitions... Not even gonna try to figure 'em out!

If you decide to carry your running shoes, I have used a string backpack to carry running shoes. Granted, it only about 5mi and was a WU to the race venue. I never really felt the shoes back there, but then again, it was just a WU effort. I just can't imagine carrying shoes in my shorts. It was uncomfortable carrying my goggles and swimcap in my shorts for my 70.3.

Running shoes in the tri top back is an interesting idea. I got to try that. I'm not carrying any bag, it creates too much drag during swim. Sticking bike shoes in the tri top may work better than in the bottom while biking. Im leaning toward riding with the bike shoes. Thx brainstorming ideas!
