I really can't pick one ...

when I was young I always loved hearing 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen' ... I love the range and the pace of the song :)

I also love hearing 'Carol of the Bells' ....

on the flip-side .... I used to love singing 'What Child is This?" ... I had the Little Golden Book BIG book of Christmas Caroles and cherished that thing so much growing up that I found a copy and bought one when my kids were little ... but , alas, I think they destroyed it as I haven't seen it in years...

Well, as a bass and musician I love "God Rest Ye" I love this version:

I like all the traditional ones really, and some of my favourites are the more obscure ones:

We spent a few hours in a music library looking for that one, It's by Michael Praetorius and that guy put out shelves and shelves of music. We started at either end and found it in the middle.

One I can't stand is Rudolph. What the hell is that trying to say? It's okay to belittle someone as long as they aren't paid attention to, but once they are you can be big suck ups? Yeah, right. ;)

What Child is this?

Always has been my favorite. No one ever plays it.

Have it on my Mp3 player to play in my favorites year 'round.

Sarah MacLaclan's version. Not my fave, but it works.

"What child is this?" is up there for me, but only because it's based on Greensleeves - which is my favorite tune period. (The Ralph Vaughn Williams Fantasia on Greensleeves, with the flute duet in the middle, rules!)

My top choice Carol, though, is "Do you hear what I hear?", which like most of the really good ones seems to be played fairly rarely.

On the less traditional/more humerous side, there are two I really like. Eartha Kitt's version of "Santa Baby" (I wouldn't mind sliding down that chimney myself), and the original "All I want for Christmas is a hippopotamous." (When you think about it, they're very similar songs. Both essentially have little girls applying little-girl logic to ask for something that they think is a very reasonable request.)

I love that song, but I don't really consider it a Christmas Carol. Oh, and I love pretty much anything Vince Guaraldi Trio did for A Charlie Brown Christmas although they're probably not considered carols.

I'm not sure what the threshold between "Christmas Carol" and "Christmas Song" is ... I guess if you know the words and can sing along, it's a Carol?

Either way, you'd probably HATE this

"O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" (about the only one I can sing easily), "Go Tell It On The Mountain", "Christmas In Jail", and another vote for Bob and Doug.
