a year of training, thousands of miles training, and possibly the most touted race in the sport of tri..........

thanks for the well wishes. I'm currently in Honolulu, the family is on Waikiki Beach. hoping to join them soon, but I just had my mental/physical crash..

what happened in my race? I pulled out around mile 15 of the run. at 13 I told the volunteer station that I was going to take a DNF, but they told me to keep walking and they'd come get me. I saw 2 medical vans go past and waved my arms, but they didn't stop.

My race wasn't going well, I knew everything was way slower than it should be (the winds weren't severe and therefore the bike should have been way faster than IMWI course) and I just said "eh, whatever, just finish". When I got to the run, I got 2 miles in and then I had to walk. Everyone said it'd "come back" but I death marched 10 more miles and each step hurt my abdomen really bad. Around mile 11, I was coughing severely and people thought I was puking, but I was coughing up stuff.

By the time I got to the medical tent, I was still having abdomen pain, but my hands were like baseball mitts. they put me on a scale and I had GAINED 9 pounds since my pre-race weigh-in and my pulse was abnormal and blood pressure was something over 98. prerace was 96/60. they were going to treat me for hyponatremia but my labs were coming back only a little abnormal. Then I started coughing up salty water with blood. One doctor came over and said he felt I had "seawater asphixation". I went to the ER and the chest xray confirmed that I had a moderate amount of fluid and compromised oxygen capacity....but thank goodness I didn't have to be held overnight.

I hope that this experience doesn't stop me, but I haven't decided. Hoping to be a sherpa or sherpa friend for next Kona visit, eventhough my race sucked, the spirit was awesome and I highly recommend a visit.........but holey man...........everyone is FAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

see you in the mainland
